Xinyu Fan

Xinyu Fan explores the notion of a ‘fear of intimacy’ in romantic relationships through large scale, sculptural wearables. Coarse horsehair is stacked together to form a brush like barrier, intended to both contest physical contact from and repulse a partner or spouse.

Fan constructs detailed pieces in copper and gilding metal involving pore-esque forms with a multitude of miniature tube sections grouped together. The hair is inserted carefully and in a uniform fashion to produce a sound, consistent boundary. Her graduate collection will include a diffusion line of single earrings, brooches, rings and large statement pieces.
