Joe is a Lecturer in Sports Therapy at Birmingham City University with an interest in sports nutrition and muscle physiology. His research focuses on the physiological roles of carnosine and β-alanine, with applications in insulin-resistance and type-2 diabetic skeletal muscle. He has also published several projects on rapid weight loss/gain in combat sport athletes and the risks associated with making-weight, with the aim to help drive change to protect the health and wellbeing of athletes.

Joe has experience working across a range of professional sports teams and organisations including Wasps RFC, Coventry United Women’s FC, Luton Town FC, Movement Therapy Clinics, and The Fire Fighters Charity. He maintains a private practice working with professional athletes and is a member of the Sport and Exercise Nutrition register (SENr).
