January 2022 graduations postponed

Birmingham City University has taken the difficult decision to postpone the graduation ceremonies scheduled for early January 2022.

This has not been a decision that anyone at the University has taken lightly as we know this will be disappointing to our graduating students and their friends and families. However, it has become increasingly clear that the mitigations we were putting in place to limit the spread of Covid-19 would mean that our graduating students would not be able to enjoy the type of joyful and memorable celebration they deserve.

In addition to this, uncertainty around any additional restrictions introduced by the Government meant that the University decided it was preferable to postpone the events now rather than wait until after Christmas when it may be more difficult to rearrange plans.

This is a postponement and not a cancellation, and as soon as we have more details about arrangements for replacement ceremonies, we will update all students who were due to graduate in January 2022.

Has my graduation been cancelled?

No – we have taken the decision to postpone graduations in January 2022. All graduating students due to attend will get the opportunity to attend a ceremony in person when we rearrange.

Am I still guaranteed a graduation in person?

Yes – we will still offer all graduates the opportunity to attend a ceremony in person when we rearrange.

When will my ceremony be rescheduled?

As soon as we have more information about arrangements for replacement events, we will let all graduating students know so that you can make the necessary arrangements to attend.

I didn't register for the January 2022 ceremonies as I couldn’t attend those dates. Can I now be considered for them when they are re-arranged?

Yes, of course. All students invited to attend the January 2022 ceremony will be give the opportunity to register for the re-arranged ceremony.

How will I receive the invite for the new ceremony?

We will send any invitations to your personal email address. If the email address we sent the recent postponement email to is not the best way for us to contact you in the future, please let us know your preferred email address by contacting us at award.ceremonies@bcu.ac.uk and we'll update this for you.

I have booked gowning and / or photography – will I get a refund?

Full refunds have been made to all original payment methods by Ede & Ravenscroft, along with any booking charges that were incurred.

If you have not received your refund, please contact us at award.ceremonies@bcu.ac.uk and include your booking reference and BCU student ID number. We will follow this up for you.

You do not need to contact Ede & Ravenscroft directly about your refund.

Will I get a refund for my guest tickets?

Full refunds have been made to all original payment methods by Symphony Hall, along with the booking fee.

If you have not received your refund, please contact us at award.ceremonies@bcu.ac.uk and include your booking reference and BCU student ID number. We will follow this up for you.

You do not need to contact Symphony Hall directly about your refund.

The card I made my bookings on has expired or is no longer in use. Can I receive a refund using a different method?

Yes, please contact us at award.ceremonies@bcu.ac.uk with your order details and we will contact the supplier(s) for you.

Why can't we just keep our guest tickets and gown booking and transfer it to the new dates?

We do not have new dates confirmed just yet, so our suppliers do not have a date to transfer your funds to on their systems at this time.

I purchased my gown rather than hiring it, can I get a refund?

You will still be able to use your gown at the re-scheduled events. However, please contact Ede & Ravenscroft directly using the details provided in your purchase confirmation email if you would prefer to get a refund. Purchases are separate to the private hire department, so the supplier will need to advise you about refund options.

I've cancelled my order direct with Ede & Ravenscroft, will I still get my refund?

All orders that are cancelled should receive a refund. Please contact Ede & Ravenscroft directly if you do not receive this by the end of January.

What should I do if I have booked travel and/or accommodation for my graduation?

We know that you may have made travel and accommodation plans and we are sorry for the inconvenience that this news will cause to these plans. We would encourage you to contact travel companies and accommodation providers as soon as possible to discuss your arrangements.

How do I get my degree certificate?

Certificates will be posted out to you upon request following your award being confirmed. You will receive an email from the University when your certificate and transcript are available with instructions to request these. Digital certificates will also be provided automatically after an award has been confirmed. You will be emailed about this too, but any further details can be found on our Digital Certificates page
