Research

ResearchThe Faculty has been conducting research for the past decade, and was rated ‘world-class’, coming top of the post-1992 universities in the Research Assessment Exercise 2008 – the body which assesses the quality of research by UK higher education institutions.

Our research extends across the technologies, exploring some of the latest digital technologies, engineering systems and bio-energies. This work also informs our academic programmes, with emerging technologies and new developments ensuring that our courses remain relevant and up-to-date.

Although not limited these areas, our work is currently focused within three major Research Centres.

The Centre for Environment and Society Research

With environmental concerns high on political and private agendas, this Centre considers how planning policy and technology affect trends both in society and the environment in light of historical, contemporary and future contexts.

The work we undertake links staff with expertise in town and country planning, tapping into University-wide staff expertise and experience, taking into account the wider social issues, major environmental projects, construction management issues and trends in key environmentally related sectors such as water and gas.

The Centre for Low Carbon Research

This Centre tackles energy consumption and the creation of a more sustainable society – a major focus of funding from EU and UK governments and research councils – through close-to-market research, exploring the reduction of energy demand and finding alternative energy sources.

The research team combines its multi-discipline, technological expertise with understanding of societal factors, such as public policy, that govern energy uptake. We collaborate across the University to promote knowledge exchange and technology-transfer relating to bio-energy, transportation and intelligent buildings.

Institute for Digital Experience and Applications

Maximising the economic and societal benefits of digital technologies requires a broad base of disciplines and seamless integration of expertise drawn from the arts and humanities, cultural and media studies, engineering, technology, health care and social sciences.

The Institute for Digital Experience and Applications supports collaboration between researchers from all of the University’s faculties, disciplines and Centres of Excellence by focusing on four key digital themes:

  • Connectivity
  • Creativity and content
  • Culture and consumption
  • Citizens and communities
