Dr Akay is a developmental psychologist with a background in clinical psychology. She is mainly interested in parenting, family dynamics and child well-being/psychopathology. Dr Akay currently serves as a Student and Early Career Council member and International Affairs Committee member at the Society for Research in Child Development. She is an editorial fellow at the Family Relations journal.

Prior to her appointment at BCU, Dr Akay was a postdoctoral researcher on a TUBİTAK-funded project about triadic parent-child play and memory conversations. Dr Akay previously worked as a research/teaching assistant, psychotherapist and kindergarten psychologist in Türkiye. She has also co-developed and implemented a few NGO projects concerning children and families, and was involved in kindergarten co-teaching.
