Michael worked at a Military Psychiatric Unit as an on-site counsellor, and volunteered at counselling and educational organizations while being a graduate student. He initially attained a BA in Psychology from the State University of New York, and further attained an MSc in Psychology and Counselling from the University of Sheffield.

Michael was employed at the University of Portsmouth with various teaching and administrative roles within the Department of Psychology since 2006. During this time, he completed a PhD in Psychology and a Post-graduate Diploma in Psychological Research Methods. He later stayed with the University of Portsmouth as a Visiting Research Fellow until he moved to Birmingham City University. His latest achievement was the completion of a Post-graduate Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education, which enhanced a research interest in academia and the improvement of student performance and satisfaction. Michael is currently studying to attain a . 

Michael is a Lecturer in Health Psychology at Birmingham City University, a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and is working on research projects that relate to obesity, eating behaviours, mindfulness, self-compassion, self-kindness, higher education and colouring books. 

He is also working on multiple research projects on psychological tools and interventions to enhance health and wellbeing.
