Mariam Iqbal took part in the Summer School programme at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) in Brunei.

Intrigued

One of the main reasons that I chose this country was that I had never heard of it before and once I had conducted further research on the country, I found it intriguing and wished to find out more about it and experience the local life and the culture.”

Once in a lifetime experience

“I enjoyed every aspect of my time in Brunei, from all the sights that we got to see, the culture we got to experience, the opportunity to take part in activities that were a once in a lifetime experience, all down to the amazing people that we spent the time with.

"The standard degree in Brunei is studied over the course of 4 years compared to the 3 that we do in Birmingham. They generally have one or two fixed lecturers also for their degrees.”

Achievements

I believe that I have gained some life skills, this experience has taught me to be more independent, helped me to appreciate and value the friendships I make, developed my communication skills, shown me the differences between ourselves and other countries and made me appreciate all that I have and has made it more clear to me as to what my life goals should be.”

Don't be afraid

It is an experience that you will remember for the rest of your life and you will definitely make some great friends out of it. Never be afraid to take part in an opportunity such as this and if you are lucky enough to be able to be a part of something like this, ensure that you do take part in everything, because you will not regret it and will have everlasting memories.”
