Our Global Media Management course is designed to meet the growing demand for intelligent, innovative thinkers to work within the media sector.

You’ll develop a critical approach to the ever-changing world of media, exploring the internal and external factors that shape its organisations.
You’ll already have a creative mind coming into the course, but this MA is a chance to develop ideas into real-world business, while planning strategies to prosper in a global economy. We’ll also teach you the management skills needed to successfully run a company in today’s fast-paced, ever-changing media industries.

The course is taught across Birmingham City Business School and Birmingham School of Media, giving you access to a multitude of expertise from both schools and from the world of business.
The course will help you develop inventive initiatives, helping you become an expert in your chosen field. You’ll also be given a solid grounding of the history and theory behind media, ensuring you have a deep knowledge which will stand you in good stead when it comes to employment. Roles within communications, public relations, advertising and media management, both national and international, will be within your grasp once you’ve completed your studies.

An honours degree from a UK University
A first degree from an overseas university (GPA 3.0 out of 4.0 or average 75 per cent or any other equivalence to the above UK qualification)
Successful passing a Pre-Master's course approved by Birmingham City University
Successful passing a Pre-Master's course at another UK university/institution with a minimum of 55 per cent average
Other qualifications will be considered on a case by case basis.

Mention any work that is relevant to your subject, highlighting the skills and experience gained.

You should also mention your future plans – if you’re planning to take a year out, don't forget to give your reasons. This module provides a starting point and a rounded view of management and human resource management. You’ll self-manage your studies with a view to develop personal development plans to enhance their management practice. The module takes a view of management and HR management across a range of organisational structures, industries and cultures of practice from a global perspective.
This module is an introduction to the management of the marketing function. Firstly, it establishes the centrality of a marketing orientation as a cornerstone of successful business. Secondly, it demonstrates how marketing activity impacts on and interacts with the other functions of a business. Thirdly, it provides a firm foundation for the subsequent pathway modules, contributing to the core vision of the course.
Contemporary Global Media
This module explores the influence of social and political factors on the media sector, the current economic climate, and the impact of recent and emerging trends on core media business processes and models. It will draw on the latest theoretical thinking in the field by critiquing case studies spanning the breadth of the industry to develop your insight and nurture the innovative thinking that will enable you to become an entrepreneurial manager or business leader in this sector.
You’ll develop your analytical and evaluative skills through a close examination of the business issues and solution approaches, and by appraising/debating potential solutions to current challenges.
This module develops an understanding of an organisation’s main financial objectives and the way they are constrained by other parts of the organisation. It provides a strong basis for further study and equips you with contemporary international accounting knowledge, practices and theory.
Global Business Strategy

Managing Media Projects
This module critically examines the impact of co-developing and co-working on innovation, market differentiation and speed-to-market within the media industries sector, using case-study examples of key players and smaller entrepreneurs in the sector.
You’ll explore new global models of production that have emerged to exploit emerging hotbeds of technological and creative talent in developing countries, and the ramifications of managing a global workforce/project team.
You’ll also get insights into project management techniques and process models used to promote innovation, to prepare you for the complexities of managing digital media/technology-based projects and services.
This module explores the development, management and roll-out of a communication strategy, the importance of maintaining consistency in brand message and values, and the role of social media platforms in business and marketing communications. You’ll examine the importance of content, managing content generation, and the impact / influence of social, user-generated content and communities.
You’ll build on your analytical and practical skills to define and generate content for a communications strategy, and subsequently for evaluating results and impact.
You’ll explore the nature of media research, the principles and philosophy that inform good research practice, and practical exercises that will help you to undertake a viable media research project.
Research Project and Proposal
You’ll complete a research project, where you’ll investigate and write about a topic that you have a long-held interest in, as well as supplying a research proposal detailing your aims.
Subject specific modules for this course include contemporary global media, managing media projects, communication strategy, and a Masters research project, where you can research a subject of interest in much greater depth.
The course prepares you for executive posts in the media and creative industries. It also equips you for roles in executive positions in the public and the third sector.
There is also potential for self-employment through the development of independent enterprises in the media and creative sector.

Birmingham School of Media is recognised as a key centre of excellence in interactive media training, television production and education by Creative SkillSet, the UK Sector Skills Council for the audio visual industries.
You will learn in our state-of-the-art facilities - including the £62m fully-digital Media Centre - located on the City Centre Campus. You will enjoy access to extensive studio and workshop space including four TV studios, six radio studios and broadcast-standard edit suites, as well as cutting-edge equipment and software.
Facilities include the largest TV floor of any university in the UK, a ‘green screen’ and the MILO motion control camera - we are one of just two universities in Europe to offer MILO technology.
Our four broadcast-standard edit suites are based on the industry-standard Avid editing system, used in almost all films and the majority of UK television. Two of the suites are specialised for Audio Finishing and Colour Grading. Our six digital radio studios are all linked an equipped with the best news and production software.
You will have access to our full broadcast-standard dubbing suites, which are based on a multi-layered ProTools desk and can dub both film and TV with up to 120 simultaneous sound sources. We also have an ADR (Additional Dialogue Recording) booth and the ability to record Foley (additional live sound).

Yemisi holds a PhD in Media from Birmingham City University, where she now contributes her expertise as a visiting lecturer.
