Course Outline
The MSc Business Computing programme is designed to provide you with a broad insight into the three interconnected areas of Information Technology, Business, and Project Management. You will develop a critical understanding of contemporary tools, techniques and models for systems development.
The programme will provide you with the opportunity to develop practical skills, using tools and techniques from the forefront of business computing, and use these effectively to model complex organisational systems. It also seeks to promote an awareness of the moral, ethical and professional framework, within which the students will operate as an IT professional in a business environment.
A key aspect of the programme philosophy is that the learning experience integrates use of major commercial software - SAS (data mining and business intelligence), SAP (strategic IT planning) - with investigation of the wider theoretical context. Students will also learn about the skills needed to become a successful entrepreneur in the IT sector.
The programme has two intakes, in September and January, and may be studied in full or part-time mode. The full time duration is 16 months for January starts.

Module Descriptions
Professional Skills and Research Methods
Introduces students to research methods, academic writing and project management, to support the Master's project. It also covers professional skills, including consultancy.
Business Systems Modelling
Introduces business systems modelling tools and techniques and best practices to facilitate the link between the IT needs of business and the technical requirements of the development team and system architects.
Databases for Enterprise
This module combines coverage of key database skills and knowledge with an exploration of recent trends such as object oriented approaches, XML and web-database technologies.
Technology Entrepreneurship
Explores the skills, knowledge and attributes required for becoming a successful entrepreneur in IT. The special issues involved in identifying eBusiness opportunities and realising them are also explored.
IT Project Management
Provides an insight into the major contemporary project management techniques used in industry across the world, including PRINCE2.
Strategic IT Planning
This module combines exploration of key theoretical ideas in Business Process Design and Strategic Planning, with practical work based on the widely used SAP ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software.
Business Intelligence
Provides students with a range of skills for processing, examining and extracting information from raw data using appropriate statistical analysis techniques.

Career Prospects
The career options for successful graduates from the programme include roles in Business Analysis, Consultancy, Project Management and Technical Authoring. You may become a researcher in a university or commercial environment. The course also develops a wide spectrum of transferable skills to take into a general business career.

Entry Requirements
We would normally expect you to hold at least a Second Class Honours degree or equivalent in an appropriate discipline. However, we can also consider your application without standard entry qualifications if you can provide evidence of the necessary knowledge and skills to successfully complete the course.
