Charlotte Carey has a creative background, starting her career as a self-employed audio-visual artist and film-maker. Her interest in technology led to her co-running another start-up: a web design and marketing consultancy based in Birmingham’s Custard Factory. Here she developed her digital marketing expertise. She has worked as a lecturer in new media, multi-media design and web design in learning organisations across the West Midlands.

For the past 10 years Charlotte has worked as a Researcher and now Senior Lecturer within the Department of Strategy, Applied Management and Marketing at Birmingham City Business School, focusing on entrepreneurship within the creative industries and entrepreneurship education. Throughout this time she has acquired an in depth knowledge of the creative industries sector, a sensitive appreciation of business issues, alongside a deep understanding of the parameters and barriers faced by individuals accessing these industries.

She has been an active researcher throughout this time, spoken at many conferences, including being keynote speaker at the Cultural Entrepreneurship conference (Pori, Finland 2012), written research papers and has a growing body of work published in academic peer-reviewed journals related to this work. Charlotte recently, successfully, defended her PhD: “Gender and Entrepreneurship in Creative Industry Career Journeys” and is now developing this for publication.

Charlotte has co-organised a number of research conferences on behalf of the university related to creative enterprise and gender and is a referee for a number of journals and conferences in the small business and entrepreneurship field.

Charlotte has recently become the Co-chair of the Creative Industries track, ISBE (Institute of small business and entrepreneurship). She is an external examiner for the enterprise and entrepreneurship provision at University of South Wales and for the Arts, Business and Creativity MA at Newcastle University
