Queer Studies in Arts and Culture - MA

Introduction

MA Queer Studies in Arts and Culture course is unique. It is the only named award at postgraduate level study in this field in the world.

This new course is the first in the UK to focus on Queer Studies and Arts Based Practice and has been designed to introduce you to both historical and contemporary arts practices and thought in relationship to subjectivity, arts and culture from an LGBTQI perspective. As a field of research Queer Studies is multi-faceted, emerging here from debates on modern and post-modern arts based material and textual practices, post-structuralist analysis, identity politics and grass-roots activism. The course has been designed to facilitate the needs of candidates from a wide range of backgrounds including (but not exclusively) artists, writers and performers from across the whole spectrum of the arts. We anticipate that the course will also be of interest to historians, critics, theorists, curators, activists, educators, health workers and community arts workers and we invite inquiries throughout the year. What we aspire to create here is an inclusive community of all sorts.

The course is delivered at the School of Art in Margaret Street, which is a QAA* and RAE** recognised centre of excellence for art-based learning and research. It was one of the first [1884] purpose built Municipal Art Schools to be built in the country. It is Grade 1 listed and provides a fantastic 21stcentury studio based and technologically supported resource in the heart of the living city.

As part of the integrated Art-Based Masters Programme, MA Queer Studies in Arts and Culture course offers you the opportunity to develop your art based and/ or writing practice in relationship to a wide range of historical and contemporary theories and contexts.

The course is also in receipt of Arts and Humanities Research Council Block Grant support.

Structure

Course Structure

We offer a practice-led, seminar and research based course which has core and optional modules and self-directed study. The core modules are concerned with the exploration of subjectivity, the formation of the self, strategies for resisting normative practices, and the potential queer theory has for making and writing. The module options offer an opportunity to explore a range of related disciplines that enable you to direct your own study according to your particular interest or choice.

The core and option modules will enable you to develop your individual art based and/or written practice. Our focus here is on making, writing and performing and candidates will be able to negotiate the exact balance between their arts-based production and the written component in consultation with staff. Both taught core and option modules are delivered in the evenings across the week in both the postgraduate certificate and postgraduate diploma stages. The core modules will provide you with different frameworks through which you can critically examine your arts practice within the context of queer studies, while the option modules will enable you to explore new terrain within contemporary intellectual debates and interdisciplinary contexts. You will have the opportunity to both enhance your existing skills and acquire new skills throughout the course. As a full-time student you will be allocated a studio or workspace (if appropriate to your practice), while as a part-time student you will be expected to have your own studio or workspace (if appropriate to your practice). Modules may be completed by negotiated project or exclusively in a written form, and the final Master’s submission will be by final negotiated presentation, exhibition, performance or dissertation.

Students are encouraged to visit exhibitions and events regularly, and our regional, national and periodic international study visits will provide inspiration, while the extensive programme of professional practice lectures and seminars, delivered by visiting artists, curators and writers will enable you to learn from some of the best in the field. Our academic members of staff are all research active and exhibit work publicly. They are available for advice and guidance.
