Introduction

This course specialises in the fascinating tradition of precious metals and gemstones, covering everything from concept design and presentation drawing through to production techniques and manufacture. Sponsorship from local bullion dealer Cookson Precious Metals Ltd enables the creation of a unique learning environment imitating the conditions of a practical workshop, allowing you to acquire a wide range of strong practical skills.

Structure

Course Structure

During your first year you’ll be introduced to basic hand and some quantity production techniques, after which you’ll be able to manufacture pieces of jewellery and small objects made to your own design in gold and silver. These practical projects are supported by a programme of core studies covering drawing and design, the efficient use of materials, health and safety practice and an introduction to the making and maintenance of tools. 

In year two you’re encouraged to develop and combine processes to create more complex pieces of work using advanced fine jewellery techniques while encouraging individuality in ideas and design. 

Your learning will be guided by some of the best in the industry. Our highly skilled and experienced team of lecturers includes experts in the fields of contemporary jewellery and silversmithing with industry experience and awareness.

Student Attendance Requirement: 4 days per week 09.30am to 4.30pm

Teaching Methods:

  • Demonstrations with technical exercises which teach you the fundamental skills.
  • Education in visual research skills, design development and design resolution. Sessions include group work and individual tutorials.
  • Contextual studies in which you will learn about the historic and contemporary worlds of jewellery through lectures, seminars and visits.
  • Professional Practice introduces you to different aspects of the jewellery trade including tours and exhibitions.
  • Using the skills you learn throughout the course you will have the opportunity to create your own designs and to participate in National competitions and live projects.

  • A good portfolio, plus four GCSEs at grade C minimum, including English language
  • Equivalent qualifications and experience
