Introduction

This course is an opportunity for successful candidates of the Postgraduate Diploma in Architectural Practice who would like to develop their knowledge and understanding of an aspect of professional practice that is developing or is under review by the profession.

The course is made up of one module and a dissertation as follows:

Research Methodologies/Preparation for Academic Writing
Master of Arts Dissertation 2 day lecture course, tutorials and 20,000 word essay.

The course covers the discipline of academic research including analytical processes, critical experimentation and synthesis, an examination of theoretical relationships and prediction methodology. There will be a sustained programme of research of a theoretical and philosophical nature and you will identify and develop a framework of ideas to contribute to your own future practice.

Graduates of the course will enhance their career paths within their existing employment and beyond as they will be able to demonstrate specialist academic knowledge of an aspect of current architectural practice.

Structure

Course Structure

You will be briefed on current issues affecting architectural practice, both nationally and internationally – codes, ethics and the construction professions; the role of design in construction procurement; the future of architectural education. You may choose one of these areas on which to base your dissertation. You may also discuss a different subject with the course director.

Teaching will include the following methods:

  • Group and personal tutorials
  • Lectures on research methods
  • Workshops on how to write a research proposal
  • Seminars led by nationally recognised policy leaders in aspects of architectural practice

Upon successful completion of the course you will be awarded a Master of Arts in Architectural Practice.

Entry Requirements

  • RIBA Part III and a Postgraduate Diploma with a minimum of 120 credits.
