These modules are aimed at post registration theatre practitioners who wish to develop their knowledge and ability to provide safe and effective care to patients in the post anaesthetic care setting. By undertaking one of these modules, you will be introduced to the principles of safe and effective post-anaesthetic care supported by a contemporary evidence base. Following completion of both the theoretical and practice components, you will be able to effectively assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care in the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) environment.

Module Description
20 credits

This module is aimed at predominately graduate post registration theatre practitioners who wish to develop their knowledge and ability to provide safe and effective care to patients in the post anaesthetic care setting. By undertaking this module, you will be introduced to the principles of safe and effective post-anaesthetic care supported by a contemporary evidence base. Following successful completion of the module, you will be able to effectively assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care in the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) environment.

During the module you will also be enabled to develop your ability to reflect, critically analyse and use your findings to promote safe, effective and evidence based care. You are expected to develop decision making skills which will allow you to plan and manage appropriate interventions for diverse patient groups with complex needs. Interdisciplinary team work and human factor considerations are considered throughout to advance your clinical awareness and enhance your clinical leadership skills. There is a consistent focus on professional and ethical responsibilities and the standards stipulated by our professional bodies throughout.

During the module you will gain work based experience in the PACU setting and have the opportunity to demonstrate fundamental practice proficiencies and develop a clinical log of these for your onward development. This experience combined with the theoretical input will enable you to explore and evaluate how interventions may influence your chosen patients overall condition, consider alternative choices and what actions need to be taken to help ensure a safe and effective outcome for the patient based upon extensive use of the contemporary evidence base. You will be supported in the clinical area by mentors as you work towards completion of your clinical log and the module assessment. This module aligns with the Programme philosophy and is designed to be flexible and practice-led. You will have the opportunity to develop skills of enquiry, reflection and problem solving. A blended learning approach is taken (incorporating both classroom and online activities via Moodle) in line with the university’s learning and teaching strategy. You will be encouraged to think critically and share practice experiences with your fellow students, as well as engaging in both directed and self-directed learning activities. You will be an active partner in your own learning and development and in return you will receive regular feedback and feedforward aimed at developing your academic skills, and have the opportunity to discuss your progress with the module team and practice mentors.

Module Description

This module is aimed at predominately graduate post registration theatre practitioners who wish to develop their knowledge and ability to provide safe and effective care to patients in the post anaesthetic care setting. By undertaking this module, you will be introduced to the principles of safe and effective post-anaesthetic care supported by a contemporary evidence base. Following successful completion of the module, you will be able to effectively assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care in the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) environment.

During the module you will be enabled to utilise your previous academic experience and develop your ability to engage in Level 7 study, with the aim of developing a deep and detailed knowledge of postanaesthetic care and use this to promote safe, effective and evidence based care. You are expected to continue to advance your decision making skills allowing you to plan and manage appropriate interventions for diverse patient groups with complex needs. Interdisciplinary team work and human factor considerations are considered throughout to advance your clinical awareness and enhance your clinical leadership skills. There is a consistent focus on professional and ethical responsibilities and the standards stipulated by our professional bodies throughout.

During the module you will gain further work based experience in your PACU setting and have the opportunity to demonstrate fundamental practice proficiencies and develop a clinical log of these for your onward development. This experience combined with the theoretical input will enable you to explore and evaluate how interventions may influence your chosen patients overall condition, consider alternative choices and what actions need to be taken to help ensure a safe and effective outcome for the patient based upon extensive use of the contemporary evidence base. You will also explore the rationale for practice, policies and procedures and will be enabled to effectively critique these to formulate conclusions as to their effectiveness; allowing you to confidently generate recommendations for future practice developments. You will be supported in the clinical area by your mentor (that you will need to identify prior to the start of your module) as you work towards completion of your clinical log and the module assessment.

This module aligns with the Programme philosophy and is designed to be flexible and practice-led. You will have the opportunity to develop skills of enquiry, reflection and problem solving. A blended learning approach is taken (incorporating both classroom and online activities via Moodle) in line with the university’s learning and teaching strategy. The creation of our new suite of courses in Sport and Life Sciences is yet another exciting development at Birmingham City University. The 10,500sq metre building at City South Campus will enable us to offer a wide range of new health, nutrition, biomedical science and sports courses, as well as providing a new home for our education programmes.

Not only are we investing £41 million in a new building to house the laboratories and teaching spaces needed, but we also plan to open up these facilities to benefit all students and the wider community. Doug Ellis Sports Centre

Our £8.5 million Doug Ellis Sports Centre boasts an 80-station fitness suite, an eight-court sports hall, and workout and spinning studios. The centre offers state-of-the-art fitness training equipment and plenty of room for team sports including five-a-side football and cricket. An all-weather pitch adds the finishing touches to the centre.

Visitors to the gym can choose a personalised fitness programme, instructed by qualified fitness trainers, and take advantage of a selection of classes, such as yoga, salsa or body combat.

Joanne Thomas

Senior Lecturer

Joanne's main focus is within teaching practice skills to students both pre and post reg. As an operating department practicioner she has many years’ experience within the intraoperative environment across a range of specialities including Hepatic, Renal, ENT and General as well as in anaesthetic and recovery as a team leader and theatre manager

Joanne teaches within the Operating Department Practitioner programmes mainly within the skills weeks and as a mentor in practice and she has now taken that further and teach the mentorship programmes within the university setting.

She has a master’s in Education and teaches on the distance learning module principles of teaching in health and social care.
