The Future Faces of Planning with RTPI President, Wei Yang

This online lecture explores how young planners can help to shape the future of the industry and what plans are in place to ensure diversity and inclusion in the profession, led by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) 2021 President, Dr Wei Yang and RTPI Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity Manager, Machel Bogues.

Dr Yang sets out the bold vision for the planning profession to engage with young future planners, advocating for a revival of spirit and a modernised planning profession. Dr Yang presents the institute and the ambition for the role town planners can play in navigating the profession to the leadership positions in society it once held.

Machel Bogues presents the RTPI CHANGE plan and discuss how the RTPI can support students and early-mid career professionals in their career progression.

The short presentations are followed by a discussion about the role that students, academics and universities can play in supporting those ambitions for a diverse and representative planning profession.

The theme of this event is important to Birmingham City University and our students, as Birmingham is one of the youngest cities in Europe, with the most diverse population outside of London in the UK. The planning profession owes it to the diverse communities of the city to be representative.
