New Head of Computing and Data Science appointed
Associate Professor Dr Jagdev Bhogal has been named the new Head of the Department for Computing and Data Science.
Dr Bhogal is an experienced academic whose main areas of expertise include systems analysis and design, relational databases, non-relational databases, database administration and data warehousing.
She is also Oracle Academic Lead and has Senior Fellow status at AdvanceHE's Higher Education Academy.
In 2011, she completed her PhD on ‘Investigating ontology based query expansion using a probabilistic retrieval model’ at City University, London, and has published nationally and internationally.
Dr Bhogal joined the University early in her career in 1989 and took on various leadership duties such as course leadership, line management and leading a number of course validations in the field of Data Science.
She has also held a number of different external roles such as being an external examiner and panelist at course approval events. She has also worked as an Accreditor, Inclusivity Officer and Academic Liason for the British Computer Society (BCS), the UK Oracle User Group Appointments Group and the BCS Data Management Specialist Group
Dr Bhogal is passionate about Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and is a member of CEBE's EDI committee. As a STEM Ambassador she is involved in outreach work with schools and colleges to encourage more females to study STEM subjects to address the gender imbalance.
She has taken part in various Faculty EDI events and has set up the BCU Women in Computing group @bcuwic to create a sense of identity and belonging for the under-represented females in computing and to provide a better learning experience.
Dr Bhogal said: “I am extremely delighted to be appointed as Head of the Department of Computing and Data Science. It is a complete honour and privilege, and a humbling experience because I never imagined this. Thank you to everyone who has supported me on my journey.
"In my view, having excellent role models is essential for greater equality in the workplace and Pro-Vice Chancellor and Executive Dean of CEBE Professor Hanifa Shah is a fantastic role model leading the way for all staff, but especially for those who are under-represented in the STEM domain. I hope I can also do the same by trying to inspire staff and students through my leadership.
"The Department of Computing and Data Science is a very exciting place to be with lots of teaching, research and enterprise activity. Together with CDS staff members, I’m sure we can work hard, grow and continue to build on this success."
Head of the School of Computing and Digital Technology Professor Andy Aftelak said: “I am delighted that Jagdev is taking up the role of Head of the Department of Computing and Data Science, a role that she has already excelled at as interim. Computing and data science, with its expertise in key technologies for the future such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and data analysis, is critical for the university’s STEAM agenda. It is a very exciting time for us and we’re well set with Jagdev to make the most of learning and teaching, research and enterprise opportunities, especially as we move into STEAMHouse.”
