Six things you need to know about STEAMhouse

We’ve listed six things you need to know about our state-of-the-art centre, including who gets to use it, what it means for the student learning experience and the benefits of project based learning and teaching.

Brand new development

STEAMhouse is a new £70 million pound building based at our expanding City Centre Campus. The state-of-the-art facility aims to drive sustainable economic growth across the city-region, creating jobs and improving quality of life.

It is the new home for the School of Computing and Digital Technology.

Extension of our campus

STEAMhouse is located on the corner of Cardigan Street and Jennens Road in the heart of Birmingham City University’s City Centre Campus.

STEAMhouse will be the permanent place of core teaching for Computing and Digital Technology students. About half of the total teaching of the school will be in STEAMhouse, but this also depends on what course they’re studying in terms of how much teaching will be in STEAMhouse. Our major labs will remain in Millennium Point so students can get the best of both worlds!

For staff, students, and more

STEAMhouse will be occupied by staff and students of the School of Computing and Digital Technology, as well as all BCU faculties to participate in exciting cross faculty, interdisciplinary learning and teaching and co-creation.

It’s also home to the STEAMhouse team, incubated companies, small and mid-sized enterprises (SMEs) and commercial partners. STEAMhouse provides access to mentors and businesses who are already employing our students, setting challenges and supporting an amazing student experience.

Project based working

Students can expect to see brand new spaces designed for project based working. They will be working closely with industry across multiple disciplines, as well as work on research inspired topics, which will ultimately transform the student experience as part of an employability-driven curriculum.

They will also be working closely with other people and businesses alike in the facility encouraging collaborative learning.

A space for collaboration

Students will be able to work alongside and gain advice and guidance from businesses.

The STEAMhouse Hatchery is a key example of the exciting, collaborative work that will happen at STEAMhouse. The 10-week competition for final-year, Master's and PhD students - as well as recent graduates - will allow students to develop their innovative business ideas and make them a reality. They'll have access to regular support from business experts, collaborate with peers and be in with the chance to win part of a £10,000 prize fund.

Transform learning experience

As it will be project based learning and teaching and cross-collaborative working, this will maximise students’ learning engagement and increase their employability chances of entering course-related professions following graduation.

A key facility that will benefit students' learning is the The STEAMhouse incubator and Millennium Point Pre-Incubator, dedicated facilities for students and graduates to develop their enterprise and entrepreneurship skills, offering valuable space, enlightening workshops, exciting programmes and long-term support.
