Computer Forensics - BSc (Hons)
Joseph has always been an avid learner of both forensics and computing, so he decided to choose the BSc (Hons) Computer Forensics course which amalgamates both of his interests. Although he found it stressful finding a placement, he has managed to secure one at Jumar Technology this year and continues to utilise and develop his knowledge from the course.
“I always wanted to go to university as I was looking forward to studying a subject I had a lot of interest in. I attended an Open Day at BCU which influenced my decision as I was impressed by the equipment that was available. Initially, I wanted to study Forensic Science, however, I really enjoyed Computer Science at college so Computer Forensics seemed to be the ideal choice. I felt it would perfectly combine my two interests and provide a wider range of opportunities for me in regards to my future career.
Since beginning my course, I have become a lot more confident both academically and socially, which is partly thanks to joining societies such as, the eSports society where I was captain of the Overwatch team. I am also more organised and alert to opportunities that may arise. I am lucky that I haven’t faced any major challenges whilst at Birmingham City University as I have a physical disability, but this hasn’t really been an issue during my time here. I think the most stressful time for me was trying to secure a year out in industry, as this is something I really wanted to experience, but I found that places were limited and very competitive. However, I am very proud to have secured a year placement at Jumar Technology!
Furthermore, I am really enjoying the intellectual challenges I face on my placement and I’m enjoying acquiring new skills. Plus, it is good to be able to use the skills I have learnt from my first two years at BCU on my placement. I am also proud of taking the role of Demonstrator for ‘Fundamentals of Mathematics’ whilst in my second year, as I like imparting my knowledge onto others and helping wherever I can.
In addition to my placement, I have received a lot of support from my tutors regarding my coursework throughout my time at BCU. I have also received a lot of help and guidance from both the Careers+ team and my tutor in securing and preparing me for my placement year. Although I am currently on my placement, my tutors have continuously checked in with me on my wellbeing and progress, which I am thankful for.
The key skills I have gained so far at the University are computer programming, IT law, computer forensic tools and techniques and network technologies; skills that will all help my future plans. Additionally, I have learnt about good interview techniques and employability skills which will be invaluable as a graduate.
Once I graduate, I hope to secure a postgraduate career in Computing, preferably continuing to study Forensics or Data Science. I feel that the skills I have gained from BCU, as well as working in industry, will put me in good stead to pursue my future goals.
To me, ‘I AM BCU’ means that I am part of a huge network of staff and students who strive to do the best they can. I am studying at a university that wants to set me up for my future career and offering me support at every juncture. I really enjoy being a part of Birmingham City University!”
