Mendelssohn Piano Trio No.2 in C minor

Indulge yourself in an evening of top quality chamber music in two free concerts with RBC’s outstanding musicians.

Impassioned and tormented, Brahms wears his heart on his sleeve in this Piano Quartet.  The anguish of his love for Clara Schumann is implied throughout, but the beautiful melody of the slow movement provides a moment of enrapt calm.  There’s a bright and exciting contrast with one of the best known of Beethoven’s Piano Trios, dubbed the ‘Ghost’ on account of its eerie-sounding Largo.  David Matthews’ Second Piano Trio from 1993 is a vibrant and moving addition to the repertoire, while Mendelssohn’s grand Piano Trio No 2 uses the three instruments to full effect, with rippling piano writing, lyrical melodies, a mercurial scherzo and energetic finale.

Stay around for a second free concert of chamber music for strings, wind and piano at 7.30pm.
