Get to know our Women in Tech Society

Our Women in Tech Society provides a safe space and network for female students in typically male-dominated computing-related subjects. Student Shriya Sami gives us more info on the society, including society benefits, why the society is important and how you can sign up!

What is the Women in Tech Society?

The Women in Tech Society is a supportive and empowering network for female students studying computing and related subjects, as either undergraduate or postgraduate.

How can female computing students get involved?

To get involved, students can join our Microsoft Teams channel.

We are also in the process of setting up a society page on our Students' Union website, which will be available soon.

What benefits do society members get access to?

As a group, we encourage one another to attend events related to science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), as well as encourage participation in hackathons and to explore new opportunities. Often, we’ll attend those events together, or team up to participate in a hackathon. This way nobody feels left out and everybody is more willing to have a go.

In terms of the social aspect, we’re planning film nights and social evenings where we’re all able to get together and have a good time.

Why is the group so important?

This group is important as it provides a safe space for female students who are studying male-dominated courses. Within the group, we can learn from one another and support each other.

This group is also important in raising awareness of the under-representation of females within the tech industry. It is only together that we can challenge stereotypes and fight for change.

What have you gained from being part of the society and what would your advice be to future students?

Being part of the group has allowed me to significantly develop my confidence. I have been able to open up within the group, engage in new opportunities and bond with fellow female computing students.

My advice to female computing students would be to not be afraid. Too often we’re worried about being the only female on a male-dominated course, which is completely normal. However, that’s exactly what the Women in Tech Society is for. Having the Society really shows that more females are studying computing and related subjects, and that support is available for every female student.
