Accelerate your career and build your development towards higher positions of responsibility with our Executive MBA course. It will provide a thorough look at different aspects of management, decision-making, strategy and organisational improvement. It is delivered on a part-time basis so that you can continue with your career as you add to your knowledge, competence and credibility.

This is a chance for you to self- manage your learning, developing your leadership abilities by drawing on your real-life knowledge and skills. You will gain invaluable business insight, combined with consultancy, which are key points when it comes to rising up the career ladder.

Throughout the programme, what you study will mirror the challenges today’s businesses face, helping you deliver appropriate and modern solutions for your organisations.

There are also plenty of networking opportunities available with course colleagues, allowing you to keep in contact with the postgraduate community created in the Business School.

We ensure the course is flexible enough to substantially fit around work. Modules are a mixture of classroom and blended online learning, and client-based consultancy, with the whole course being practice-based. Classroom attendance is scheduled for a Friday and Saturday once a month, allowing it to better fit with work and personal commitments.

An honours degree or equivalent qualification.

If you do not have a degree you could still be considered through our APEL procedure which looks for evidence of being able to benefit from, and succeed on the programme through your management experience.

You should also occupy (or have occupied) a position of management responsibility for a minimum of two years.

Postgraduate loans

Stage 1: PG Certificate in Management

The course starts with an induction, which will prepare you for what is ahead in the programme and help to clarify administrative issues. Following an induction, the three stages of the programme progressively build towards the integration and application of the knowledge and skills in the later modules. 

The PG Certificate stage covers the functional areas of management and the skills required in today’s dynamic business world. These are the basis of progression into the next two stages.

Marketing Management
20 credits

In this module, you will:

  • Investigate the marketing environment and review the nature, scope, role and key factors influencing the market prospects. 
  • Examine the issues, problems and practices involved when approaching markets and evaluate strategic options in the design and implementation of marketing programmes.
  • Using a range of theoretical perspectives, critically evaluate the importance of the various elements of the marketing mix and marketing strategies adopted by domestic and/or international businesses.
  • Synthesise the critical aspects of marketing to identify, produce and inform arguments, plans and selling issues in the marketplace.
Financial Performance Management
20 credits

In this module, you will:

  • Evaluate the different competing financial objectives of the firm and the agency problem between shareholders and managers in publicly listed companies
  • Demonstrate the ability to analyse financial data, conduct cost-benefit analysis and financial planning for effective business decisions using spreadsheet software package
  • Critically evaluate investment projects using appropriate investment appraisal techniques to assess suitability and viability of the projects consistent with the overall strategy and business model(s) of the firm
  • Critically appraise the major issues of capital management, relative advantages and disadvantages from the various perspectives of the stakeholders of the firm
Organisations and People Management
20 credits

In this module, you will:

  • Critically review contemporary issues, challenges and complexities of managing organisations in a diverse environment
  • Critically assess HR policies, procedures, and processes, and evaluate their nature, purpose, effectiveness and implementation to support strategic objectives
  • Critically evaluate contemporary HR and employment related issues such as  legal, cultural and organisational frameworks in which domestic or international organisations operate
  • Critically reflect on the skills and knowledge acquired as an aspiring manager in the contemporary management or HR function and reflect on the experience of working within a diverse work team

Stage 2: PG Diploma in Management Studies

The modules here focus on strategic issues, investigating management, thought, and how to lead and manage change. This builds on the first stage and takes you to the position of being able to complete the final stage for your MBA.

Contemporary Strategic Management and Globalisation
20 credits

In this module, you will:

  • Evaluate and appraise the global business context and appreciate the dynamic nature of doing business in today’s globalised market environment
  • Understand the importance of adapting leadership and strategic management to meet organisational and regional expectations when doing business abroad
  • Critically analyse contemporary theories in management and formulate a range of different approaches aimed at maintaining effective strategic management in response to prevailing global business considerations
  • Demonstrate acquired skills in global awareness, communication, and strategic management while recommending solutions for organisations seeking to pursue international strategies
Strategic Leadership and Transformation
20 credits

In this module, you will:

  • Critically examine and assess the contribution of leadership and management theory to strategic leadership styles, practice and appraise a range of tools, models and theoretical concepts concerned the process of managing change
  • Critically evaluate organisations ethical and value-based approaches to leadership and apply different aspects of strategic leadership and management practice to demonstrate how these impact on organisational effectiveness within a global context
  • Reflect on and critically evaluate change/transformation processes in organisations that takes into account organisational dynamics, culture and human (emotional) dimensions in attempts to transforming and managing change and how leadership strategies have impacted on organisational direction
  • Recommend and justify appropriate change models/strategies including the leadership strategy and style to manage change and reactions to change, including resistance management in the real world and arrive at solutions to overcome these issues
Enterprise, Innovation and Creativity
20 credits

In this module, you will:

  • Critically Review literature, theories, models and concepts and how they have informed contributed towards your choice of business and the development of the business plan
  • Demonstrate the skills of conducting feasibility study, data collection, analysis and synthesis necessary for the formation of defendable business plan with evidence of primary and/or secondary research
  • Create a coherent and realistic business plan that integrates the key functional areas of organisations and demonstrates creativity, innovation and underpinned by entrepreneurship theories, models and concepts

Stage 3: MBA

This final stage in the progressive programme is focused on demonstrating application of your knowledge and skills. 

Consultancy Project
20 credits

You will be required to spend a week on location as part of this module.

In this module, you will:

  • Critically review appropriate methodological issues, academic models and theory and their practical applicability to the business/organisational arena in order to produce a ‘fit for purpose’ consultancy presentation and report
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of relevant management issues and the implications/potential impact of derived/proposed recommendations
  • Initiate, negotiate and agree a project’s terms of reference with the various stakeholders involved, evaluating the opportunities, costs and risks involved
  • Successfully present and support a business consultancy ‘report’ and orally present and support a final presentation of the consultancy project findings to the client and supervisors
Strategic Management Project
40 credits

In this module, you will:

  • Formulate a management project with clearly defined aims and objectives
  • Critically evaluate the literature related to the chosen management topic
  • Demonstrate the ability to devise, select and apply a methodology appropriate to the chosen project
  • Demonstrate the skills of research, analysis and synthesis necessary for the formation of defensible conclusions and appropriate recommendations

How You Learn

Modules are a mixture of classroom and blended online learning with the whole course being practice-based. Classroom attendance is scheduled for a Friday and Saturday once a month, allowing it to better fit with work and personal commitments.

In addition to the classroom and blended learning, you will need to devote your own study time when this works for you or in conjunction with small groups of colleagues for some modules.

We are constantly investing in our estate and are currently in the process of spending £260 million on new learning facilities.

The Curzon Building

This course is based at our City Centre Campus – and specifically The Curzon Building, alongside other Social Sciences, Law, Business and English students.

The £63m building offers students a unique social learning space, including a dedicated student hub incorporating student support services, in the heart of Birmingham’s Eastside development.

The Business floors house an extensive number of IT facilities, breakout areas, and specialised rooms. The Marketing Link Agency is designed to replicate a modern marketing firm, allowing students to get real-life experience of working in the marketing sector. Anne-Marie McTavish is a leading expert in Location Independent Working and Technology Enhanced Flexible Working. She leads the Department of Management, HR and Enterprise within Birmingham City Business School.

Dr Steve McCabe

Director of Research Degrees

Having graduated from the University of Manchester in 1984 with a degree in management, Dr McCabe spent time in industry as a management trainee before commencing an EPSRC research-sponsored MSc in Management at Birmingham University in 1988.

Since 1989 he has been employed at Birmingham City University as a management lecturer (teaching general and human resources, as well as strategy and operations but with a special emphasis on TQM, improvement techniques and benchmarking).

As well as teaching, Steven  is an active researcher and completed a Ph.D on a part-time basis at the University of Birmingham which explored the use of quality management techniques. He has written extensively on the subject of management and quality and has produced numerous papers, chapters for books and three books (see publications tab). He is currently working with Professor John Sparrow on a HEIF project (‘Development of value-adding business support need diagnostic: Timeliness and focus of business/management business development support’) which is exploring the way in which small and medium-sized businesses make key decisions about future direction (strategy). In particular the research aims to identify the nature of factors that contribute to what are known as ‘tipping points’.

Dr Martyn Brown

Senior Lecturer in Organisation Studies and Coordinating Director of Post Graduate Framework Degrees

Dr Martyn Brown has a background in engineering but also spent four years as a professional musician. He has worked in engineering consultancy and events management in the voluntary sector and has carried out marketing consultancy on the West Bank. He holds an MBA from Aston University and a PhD examining the rise in interest in spirituality in the workplace.

Dr Vikram Finavker is a Lecturer in Finance at Birmingham City Business School. Vikram holds a PhD in Finance from Middlesex University. Prior to joining Birmingham City University Business School, Vikram worked at Nottingham University, Coventry University College and Middlesex University.

Vikram also holds a master's degree in Research Methods for Business and Management and Banking and Finance.
