Born in Washington, D.C.; educated at Swarthmore College (near Philadelphia). Taught by Howard Mayer Brown and Edward E. Lowinsky at University of Chicago. Lectured atBerkeley (1984/5), UCLA, (1986–8), Southampton (1989/90), Manchester (2002–5). Free-lance editor, book designer, and typesetter of academic books in the humanities, 1989–present (0.1–1.0 FTE); specialization in critical editions of ancient Greek papyri. Senior In-house Editor, The new Grove dictionary of music and musicians, 2nd edition, 1994–2000. Executive Officer, Royal Musical Association, 2001–present (0.25–0.3 FTE). Senior Researcher / Associate Professor, Birmingham Conservatoire, 2011–present (0.4–0.6 FTE).
