An image of the creased and aged front page of a fictitious Russian newspaper of circa. 1900. The newspaper carries the headline ‘We warn the Tsar’. Under the headline is an illustration of a bare-chested Tsar on horseback holding a rifle, plus fake cyrillic text – this satirises a notorious photograph of Vladimir Putin

We Warn the Tsar!

"Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can quietly become a power no government can suppress, a power than can transform the world." Howard Zinn

An original piece of ‘theatre for our times’, devised and performed by first year BA Applied Theatre students.

It may be apocryphal, but there is enduring value in the story of the headline in a small newspaper from an obscure, nameless town, that at the turn of the 20th century became agitated by events in Crimea: “We warn the Tsar.”

The phrase has become a by-word amongst journalists for sticking one’s neck out; used to mock those without agency for speaking out without any awareness of their position… We choose to view the story as heroic.
