Dr Maadh Al Kalbani is a Research Fellow in Human Computer Interaction (HCI) within the DMT Lab specialising in HCI, Extended Reality technologies (AR/VR/MR), usability analysis and user experience. He received a BSc degree with honours in Digital Media Technology and a PhD degree in Computer Science from Birmingham City University with his work in natural hand-based interaction in AR environments.

Prior to his time at BCU, Maadh was a Research Fellow at Aston Business School where he worked on a government funded project that focused on increasing accessibility for individuals with less visible impairments on railway stations, working closely with organisations in the National Rail Network and National Health Service. The project was awarded The Nigel Slack Teaching Innovation Award that recognises impact and innovation in the teaching of Operations Management in the 2019 European Operations Management Association (EurOMA) conference.

More recently, Maadh was the AR Technical Specialist at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) as part of a KTP project with BCU, where he authored the AR Playbook for GSK Consumer Healthcare and developed multiple AR tools for various business teams across the organisation, helping the company adopt AR as a tool to improve sales, marketing operations and gain higher market share. The project achieved the highest grade of “Outstanding” by the KTP grading panel for its impact and quality.

Maadh has published in a number of A* ranked international conferences, and acts as a reviewer for leading conferences and journals in the field of HCI, including IEEE Transactions on Visualisation and Computer Graphics (TVCG) and IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality (ISMAR).

Maadh is a certified agile Professional Scrum Master and Product Owner, and a member of IEEE, IEEE Computer Society and Immerse UK.
