Karl qualified as a diagnostic radiographer in 1999 here at Birmingham City University, although at the time it was called the University of Central England in Birmingham. There has been a generational leap in the way that diagnostic imaging is delivered during his time of practice. When first qualified, photographic processing of images was general practice, and all the associated chemistry, Barium contrast studies were the most prevalent type of investigation for gastro-intestinal conditions, CT scanners produced 1 image at a time.

Contrast this with the current situation where digital imaging is now available, very few barium studies, and CT scanners producing 1000’s of images per scan. Karl feels it is essential in such a fast paced area to maintain clinical skills, which he does by continuing to work clinically 1 day a week. Karl's specific areas of expertise are diagnostic radiography, computed tomography and intravenous cannulation.

Outside of work Karl plays football, cycles, and spends quite a bit of time attempting to exhaust his daughters and dog in local parks and forests.
