Dr Marianne Hensman

Marianne graduated from Leeds Beckett University in 1999 with a BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy. She was practising as a physiotherapist from 1999-2007 working in both acute and community settings, latterly specialising in rehabilitation of patients with neurological conditions.

Marianne completed her MSc in Continuing Professional Development (Physiotherapy) at the University of Nottingham in 2009. In 2007 Marianne moved into education and was appointed as a Clinical Link Tutor at the University of Birmingham. The role included teaching students on the BSc and MSc pre-registration Physiotherapy courses as well as placement preparation, liaison with and support for clinical partners across the West Midlands.

In 2015 Marianne developed her research interests beginning a PhD investigating sedentary behaviour, physical activity and exercise in people with multiple sclerosis. Following a series of qualitative and quantitative studies, this was completed in 2021. During this time Marianne also developed her teaching role, becoming a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2016.

Since completing her PhD Marianne has worked for two years at Coventry University as an Assistant Professor. This enabled her to develop her interest in interprofessional teaching. She took up the post at Birmingham City University in December 2023.

Marianne teaches predominantly on the MSc pre-registration Physiotherapy course covering neurology content linked to her professional and research background. She also teaches interprofessional sessions to other health care students, relating to communication and professional practice, transition to employment, and CPD.
