Professor Amanda Bateman

Amanda Bateman is a Professor of Early Years at Birmingham City University. She has many years of experience in early childhood education, beginning her career as an early childhood practitioner in Wales and then completing a PhD in children’s interactions at Swansea University in 2010.

Professor Bateman has many years of experience as an early childhood education academic at Waikato University, New Zealand and re-established the early childhood undergraduate degrees accredited by the Welsh Government at Swansea University. Her research involves collecting video and audio data of children’s interactions and transcribing and analysing it using a conversation analysis approach. Professor Bateman has led two funded projects from the New Zealand Teaching and Learning Research Initiative (TLRI) spanning four years.

She has recently been a co-investigator on a recent third TLRI and New Zealand Marsden project investigating how early childhood centres support refugee children and families to belong in New Zealand whilst maintaining their cultural heritage. Findings from these projects have been disseminated through national and international conference presentations, academic journal articles, book chapters and books, including Early Childhood Education: The Co-Production of Knowledge and Relationships, and the co-edited Children’s Knowledge-in-interaction: Studies in Conversation Analysis; Children and Mental Health Talk: Perspectives on Social Competence; and Talking with children: A handbook for early childhood education.
