Hannah Jesse RSA award - A change of clothes

BA (Hons) Illustration student Hannah Jesse has won the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) Student Design Award for her animation exploring the environmental impact of the fashion world.

A Change of Clothes is a playful animation seeking change in the industry through the adoption of a circular economy.

The animation was submitted in the Moving Pictures Category and won the People’s Postcode Lottery Dream Fund Award of £1,000.

Now in its 96th year, the annual RSA Student Design Awards is the world’s longest-running student design competition. Past winners include the former Chief Design Officer at Apple Sir Jony Ive, Director of City Strategy for the City of Melbourne Kate Dundas, former Head of Innovation at Nike Richard Clarke, and Co-founder of IDEO and designer of the first laptop, Bill Moggridge.

The Awards challenge emerging designers to engage with a range of design briefs centred on social and environmental impact. Hannah is the third student from the BA (Hons) Illustration course to win an Award.

Hannah said: “A Change of Clothes is my animated response to a commentary on the environmental impact of the fashion world, and how we can change that by altering our approach to the industry. It's all about encouraging circular systems, which refers to designing waste out of our business models, and so I used circularity as a kind of catalyst for the animation's design, structure, and motion.

“I'm absolutely delighted to receive an RSA Student Design Award. I'd really like to thank BCU and the Illustration department for the amazing support, in particularly my tutor Ian Dodds who introduced the competition to me and helped me throughout the development of the animation. It's been a wonderful experience and I can't wait to carry on animating in the future.”

The Award Ceremony will take place online on Thursday 30 July. See all the winners here.
