When you enrol at Birmingham City University, either for the first time or as a returning student, you enter into a formal agreement with the University, with responsibilities on both sides.

Your responsibilities

Your responsibilities as a student include:

  • attending the University
  • engaging fully with your studies
  • taking part in and committing time and energy to every aspect of your learning, whether in a formal teaching environment, in group work with your peers or in self-directed study
  • following the rules and policies which apply to students.

At enrolment you'll be asked formally to agree to the University’s terms and conditions, including all our policies and procedures.

Our responsibilities

Our responsibilities to you include legal obligations under consumer law, which include making sure you can easily find important information about:

  • The University
  • Your course
  • Other aspects of University life

Important information

About your course

Before you enrol, we strongly recommend that you work through all the information about your course, which is available on the course page. Make sure you know:

  • Title
  • Core and optional modules
  • Normal length of course and any maximum period permitted for study
  • Award(s) on successful completion
  • Any professional body accreditation associated with the course
  • How the course will be delivered, and the balance between various elements of the course, such as the number and type of contact hours that you can expect (including lectures, seminars, work placements, feedback on assignments)
  • Your expected workload (including the expected self-study time)
  • Details about the general level of experience or status of the staff involved in delivering different elements of the course
  • The overall method(s) of assessment for the course (such as by exams, coursework or practical assessments, or a combination of these).

Paying for your course

All of our course fees and options are now listed under the individual courses. Details about what you need to pay and by when can be found in Paying your fees.

Make sure you're aware of the following when it comes to paying your course: 

  • Tuition fee payable per year (including how any annual increase will be calculated)
  • Whether you need to pay a deposit
  • Whether your fees are paid for by a sponsor or funding body
  • Any extra costs such as for field trips, equipment, materials, bench fees or studio hire – and whether these are optional or mandatory
  • When you'll need to make payments and how you can do so (for example, payment plans)
  • What happens if you can't or don't pay.

Rules, regulations and complaints

The Academic Regulations and other policies apply to you as a student, so it’s important that you read and understand them. Make sure you understand how to find the following:

  • The Student Contract has the details of rules and regulations that apply to students, including how to raise concerns with the University, and rules regarding use of the University’s computer systems, library and learning resources and student identity cards
  • The policies and procedures that apply to the University and to you as a student
  • Our complaints procedures.

Making changes to your course

Our courses are continually reviewed and refined to ensure that we’re providing the best student experience for you. When we make changes, these will be published as a summary in our programme guide.

When we propose a major change, we will explain what this is in detail, and will consult with student programme representatives and the Students' Union – and add their comments and recommendations so you can see what they think of our changes.

Accommodation

Students living in University Locks are required to enter a separate contract or licence with the University. This only applies to University-run accommodation, and other providers or private landlords will have their own separate terms and conditions.

Withdrawing from University

You have the right to cancel your contract and withdraw from your studies without any penalty if you notify us within 14 days of the date that you accept our offer. Find out more about withdrawing from the University here.
