BA (Hons) Media and Communication/CIPR Postgraduate Diploma
Fiona Denning is a multiple graduate of Birmingham City University. After graduating with her first degree, BA (Hons) Media and Communication, Fiona’s career got off to a flying start, taking responsibility for city centre communications for the West Midlands Police. Keen to make more of her skills Fiona soon returned to the university to improve her career prospects with a part-time CIPR (Chartered Institute of Public Relation) postgraduate diploma. It was a commitment that certainly paid off.
I wouldn’t have been promoted without my CIPR diploma, It has given me a much more strategic focus and helped boost my confidence as a communicator.”
Currently working for the NHS at the brand new Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) she has risen from Communications Assistant to Communications Specialist, a promotion that Fiona believes was directly facilitated by her decision to undertake a postgraduate qualification: “I wouldn’t have been promoted without my CIPR Diploma – it has given me a much more strategic focus and helped boost my confidence in my abilities as a communicator.”
Throughout her career Fiona has found that skills that she acquired during her studies have proved invaluable: “I learnt how to work to strict deadlines and organise events (I was one of the organisers for the end of year show), how to pitch to an audience and how to write succinct copy – all essentials for a career in PR.”
For Fiona and her colleagues at QEHB, the opening of the new hospital in June has definitely been a career highlight: “We all feel really privileged to have been involved in such a big part of Birmingham’s and the NHS’s history.”
