Why study Social Sciences in Birmingham

What makes Birmingham City University so special? It’s not just our state-of-the-art, modern City Centre Campus. Read on to find out why you should come to Birmingham to study Sociology, Black Studies or Youth Work and Communities.

Cultural diversity

Birmingham is one of the most diverse cities in the UK and is even more ethnically diverse than London. You will have the opportunity to work with individuals from all walks of life and varied cultural backgrounds. We are proudly rooted in a vibrant, diverse and constantly transforming city, but we never shy away from the people and the professionals living and working on the margins of society. We apply our research in real-world settings nationally and internationally, working with communities, prisons, hospitals, schools and the police to tackle social problems and understand, and influence, social change.

Second city

Birmingham is the UK’s second-biggest city, meaning we have many opportunities, activities, and projects with which to get involved. Being at its heart will only strengthen your employability and knowledge as the city continues to grow and thrive.

We offer an abundance of opportunities

Our sociology staff have links with local public and third sector organisations that will help you make professional contacts so that you can apply your studies to future career prospects when taking part in voluntary or placement work.

We employ a wide variety of learning and teaching methods to ensure you are exposed to a range of learning styles, including traditional lectures, workshops, student-led sessions and our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

Studying Social Sciences at Birmingham City University is about not reading sociology but doing sociology, allowing you to explore and question social norms and discover the complex issues behind your everyday routines and social practices in a range of spatial contexts, applying what you learn to your own lived experiences. Through the Birmingham 2029 project, you will have the chance to explore such themes within the city of Birmingham, an urban context that hosts diverse communities perfect for sociological examination.

Our staff are leading experts in the field.

You’ll learn fromindustry experienced staff, who have an array of skills and knowledge developed through working for organisations such as youth charities and participating in research funded by the European Union.
