The Centre for Environment and Society Research (CESR), attached to the School of Engineering and the Built Environment, carries out applied research at the interface between the built and natural environment. We work across disciplinary and theoretical boundaries to tackle a range of complex policy challenges.

Our work is set within cross-cutting themes of:

  • ecosystem service governance
  • environmental and social change in multi-functional landscapes.

Work on each of these themes draws on lessons from history to plan for future adaptation to environmental change.

Our research climbs University league tables in REF2014. Find out more >>

Recent developments including staff changes will see CESR evolving into four Centres in the near future: these will include the Centre for Digital Construction (led by Dr Niraj Thurairajah), the Knowledge ExCHANGE Research Centre of Excellence (CHANGE) (led by Professor Mark Reed), the Centre of Planning and Environmental Sustainability (led by Professor Alister Scott) and the Centre for Plant and Machinery Management (led by Professor David Edwards).
