The Inspiration of Revolutionary Model operas to the Development of Contemporary Chinese Animation 

Research Questions 

The development of Chinese animation has experienced a process from prosperity to decline. Chinese traditional culture is the main theme of the domestic animation, which once enjoyed a high reputation on the international arena. The birth of the "Princess Iron Fan", "Monkey King" and other classic animation films from 1940s to 1960s; The emergence of the "Black Sergeant", "Gourd Doll", " Avanti's Story "and a series of excellent works in the 1980s; while paper-cut, water-ink, puppets and other forms also has a distinctive Chinese national characteristics. But from the 1990s, with the large influx of European, American and Japanese animation into the Chinese animation market, the development of China's animation industry gradually entered an awkward position. The reason is because the development of Chinese animation is lack of Originality, nationality and innovation. So how could we solve this problem?

Objectives 

Peking Opera, one of the five operas in China, based on xipi and two yellow accent, with violin, gongs and drums as accompaniment, is regarded as the quintessence of China. It is not only a treasure of Chinese civilization, but also an important means of interpret and disseminate Chinese traditional culture. Revolutionary Model Operas refers to the two dozen works of stage art setting up as "model" during Cultural Revolution. Its representative works include the opera "Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy" "The Red Lantern," "Sha Jia Bang" "Azalea Mountain" and the ballet "The Red Detachment of Women," "White-Haired Girl" and other plays. Through the deconstruction and research of traditional Peking Opera and Revolutionary Model Operas, try to find the elements and characters that worth to be referenced during the creation of contemporary animation films. 

Biography

Qi Jianghua is an Associate Professor at the School of ARt & Design, Xi'an Technological University, China. She obtained her MA at BIAD (Birmingham City University) in Visual Communication in 2003, and a BA from Xi'an Technological University.
