Analysis on Nonlinear Narrative Structure of Experimental Animation

Research Objectives

As an indispensable and important part of animation creation the quality of narrative completion directly influence the quality of the whole animation. In the study of animation narrative it is worth conducting systematic and the thorough research for the animation narrative rules and characteristics.

The animation works have developed into co-exist state including the short films, long films, TV series, drama series and requires the better narrative technique.  According to the narrative theory the animation narrative structure can be roughly divided into two categories of narrative, that is, linear narrative and non-linear narrative.

Experimental animation short films with pure art features encourage originality and emphasize expressing personal style. Creators describe things dramatically, develop interesting stories and pursue unique form of expression in free expression space. Nonlinear narrative method adapts to the innovation and freedom nature of experimental short films without following the traditional chronological order and fixed causal link. The pioneer and exploration of experimental animation short films in the narrative way have a profound impact on the heritage of innovation and development of animation art.
