Foundation year

The HELS Foundation Year is based in the Academic Development Department, and has been specifically designed for students coming in with alternative entry requirements and who are committed to studying at Birmingham City University.

Students will undertake Level 3 study, which has been designed as a prelude to their chosen degree course within the Faculty. This provides a learning journey with opportunities for students to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding and a secure platform on which they can build throughout their academic career in higher education.

As part of the Foundation Year, students will explore and develop a number of essential academic, interpersonal and professional skills that will help them succeed in their future degree level studies.

When studying modules during the Foundation Year, classes will consist of a mixture of fellow students from Health, Education and Life Sciences Faculty (HELS) courses. This provides students with opportunities to learn, and to share knowledge from and within a diverse learning community. For the subject pathway modules students can expect to study alongside fellow students with similar subject interests, allowing for the development and sharing of discipline-based knowledge.
