Placements
Midwifery
Students will spend up to 60 per cent of their time during the course within a clinical area linked to one of our partner Trusts.
You will remain at the same trust until qualification.
Three-year students
Before they begin their programme, students are given the opportunity to rank the Trusts in order of preference.
Every effort is then made to place the student at either their first or second choice. Occasionally however, it may be necessary to utilise their third or fourth choice.
BSc (Hons) / Graduate Diploma Shortened Programme in Midwifery
These students are employed by the individual Trusts for the duration of the course, and therefore apply to both the Trust of their choice and Birmingham City University. Places at each Trust are limited however, so if all of the places for one Trust are full, an alternative will be suggested.
During both programmes, students will rotate around each clinical area related to childbirth and women's health. Initial placements include introductory weeks on community and delivery suite followed by assessed placements in antenatal, postnatal, community, neonatal and delivery suite areas. The long programme students also spend time on a gynaecology ward.
Holidays
Seven weeks of annual leave are set for the year.
During the summer, students are otherwise on full-time clinical placements. Between each placement, students will spend time in University and undertake self directed study. Students are expected to work shifts including nights, weekends and some bank holidays in order to work with their mentor.
The placement support tutor and administration team oversees all placements and communicates with the placement areas regularly to inform them of the students they are to expect.
