New Kings of the World

Dispatches from Bollywood, Dizi and K-Pop

America’s popular culture is also the world’s popular culture, right? From Buenos Aires to Jakarta to Moscow, people are drinking Coke, watching Marvel movies, listening to Beyoncé, and wearing Nike sneakers. Aren’t they?

Not so. Around the world, more people watch Bollywood films, avidly follow Turkish soap operas, and listen to South Korean K-Pop. Truly global in its range and allure, the new non-American culture craze is the biggest challenge yet to Hollywood, McDonald’s, and blue jeans.

Bollywood, Turkish soap opera Dizi and South Korean pop music are part of the new global pop culture that can also be easily consumed, especially in developing economies with booming technology thanks to smartphones.

Join acclaimed author Fatima Bhutto as she shares her experiences of meeting and ‘uncovering’ the new kings of the world, including Shah Rukh Khan, Bollywood superstar, going behind the scenes of Magnificent Century - Turkey’s biggest TV show (watched by upwards of 200 million people) - and travelling to South Korea to see how “Gangnam Style” became the first YouTube video with one billion views.

About the speaker:

Fatima Bhutto was born in Kabul, Afghanistan and grew up in Syria and Pakistan. She is the author of four previous books of fiction and nonfiction. Her debut novel, The Shadow of the Crescent Moon, was longlisted for the Bailey's Women's Prize for Fiction and the memoir about her father’s life and assassination, Songs of Blood and Sword, was published to acclaim. Her most recent book is The Runaways, a novel.
