After joining the School in 2011 as Deputy Head (Partnerships, Research and Enterprise) Ian moved to the role of Director of International Recruitment and Development for the School of Law in 2018.  As Director, he has strategic responsibility for the recruitment of international students; international academic and research partnerships; and the international mobility of students and staff in the School of Law.

Working with colleagues across the School and university Ian promotes the excellent student experience and portfolio of law programmes that are on offer to a global student audience along with the benefits of studying at Birmingham City University.  On behalf of the School of Law Ian has led on the development of transnational education (TNE) partnerships with providers in several other countries and currently we offer undergraduate and postgraduate law courses in collaboration with specific overseas providers.

Ian is particularly proud of the TNE partnerships developed by the School of Law and such established partnerships help to evidence the international and global outlook of the School. The school are proud to say that BCU law graduates who studied their degree thousands of miles from Birmingham are working around the world in a myriad of professions related to law.

Part of Ian’s responsibility has been the development of an annual Summer School aimed at international students who wish to get a flavour of studying law at BCU.  The school has teaching and research expertise in the delivery of international law and associated themes that provide a great introduction to thinking about the purpose and function of law within a global context.

Having oversight of outgoing and incoming student mobility in the School of Law supports the cultural exchange of not only law students and what it means to learn law at an overseas university but also the opportunity for student to broaden their own cross-border networks. The school are proud to say that it has a long history of welcoming exchange students for short term study in the School and ensures that all of our law courses are designed to allow for international mobility. Ian also coordinate the international mobility of staff for the purposes of education, marketing of programmes and research exchange.

During his time in HE, Ian has built up significant experience that has included the design, leadership and management of national and international foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate universities around the UK and world. He has worked at higher education institutions overseas and since moving to BCU in 2011 has led on the development of TNE law courses.

Since 2012 Ian has worked with Birmingham City International College on the development of an international law foundation year and in 2017, he designed and developed the School’s successful law foundation course. Ian has extensive experience as an external examiner and currently is the Chief External Examiner for another UK Law School.  Ian is currently studying a Doctorate in Education at the University of Cambridge looking at ways to ensure TNE is a sustainable way of education.
