Emma Lines - Operating Department Practice

Operating Department Practice student, Emma Lines, was keen to study her course. Hear from Emma what her favourite thing about BCU is, why she loves Birmingham and her university essentials.

What’s the best discovery you’ve made since starting the university?

How much I have in common with other students on my course. I have made some amazing life-long friends.

What's your favourite thing about BCU? 

The facilities are excellent. From the libraries and computer suites to the skills lab, mock operating theatre and ward. Also not forgetting the variety of places to grab a hot drink between lectures. 

What do you love about Birmingham? 

The variety of restaurants, cafes and bars to visit. Along with the many local attractions such as the Botanical Gardens and places to go walking nearby.

What are your top tips for students starting the course? 

Be organised! I made a plan at the start of the year so I knew when different items needed to be submitted by well in advance. This helped me to plan my time efficiently.

If you’re struggling with anything at all contact your lecturers or the student support services, there are so many people there to help as ultimately everyone wants you to succeed. 

What didn’t you know before starting your course?

How much I would enjoy it. I was really nervous about returning to education, especially as a mum of two however I have loved every minute so far.

What are your university essentials?

Blank ‘Flash cards’ to revise for exams. A good backpack to transport books and notepads to and from university. ‘Sticky notes’ to mark pages in textbooks that contain information you want to use for assignments.
