Emma is a Graduate Research Teaching Assistant (GRTA) and PhD student in the School of Education.

She has a background in primary education, having worked as a primary and special needs teacher, and SENCo. Her professional experience continues to inform her teaching and research, with a particular focus on inclusive education and the rights of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Emma is currently undertaking a PhD, exploring the lived experiences of children with SEND and their transition to school during Covid-19. Her research is grounded in inclusive methodologies, and reflects her broader interest in social justice, children’s rights and ethical research practices.

Alongside her doctoral research, Emma currently teaches on the BA (Hons) Early Childhood studies programme. She contributes to modules including ‘The Developing Child’ and is the module leader for ‘Transitions and Change in Early Childhood’. Emma also teaches on the MA Education programme, delivering sessions around Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Her teaching draws on her classroom experience and commitment to inclusive, rights-based approaches in early childhood education. She also supervises students undertaking dissertations at both Level 6 and 7.

Emma holds a master’s degree in Child Autism from the University of Birmingham, and the National Award for SEN Coordination (NASENCo).

In addition to her teaching, Emma plays an active role in the research community, including the Centre for the Study of Practice and Culture in Education (CSPACE), where she facilitates cross-disciplinary meetings and helps coordinate conferences. She is also part of the Early Years Research Group (EYRG) and attends conferences and seminars.
