Lecture Programme
Fashioning Futures is a series of lectures and other events featuring esteemed speakers with a perspective of on-going trends in fashion and textiles. Since 2016, we have organised and hosted over 15 events, attracting nearly 1000 attendees and featuring over 20 different speakers. It is organised by the School of Fashion and Textiles, Birmingham City University.

Kate Fletcher: Author, Researcher, Design Activist

Kate Fletcher (PhD) is a Professor at Centre for Sustainable Fashion, University of the Arts London, UK. She is the most cited scholar in fashion and sustainability and her work, like that on post-growth fashion and fashion localism, both defines and challenges the field. She has written and/or edited eight books translated into seven languages. Kate is a co-founder of the Union of Concerned Researchers in Fashion. Her latest work is about design, nature and clothing.
Brooke Roberts-Islam: Designer, Writer, Fashion tech and Sustainability Innovator

Brooke Roberts Islam is an award-winning digital knitwear designer and founder of the Brooke Roberts Innovation Agency (BRIA). At BRIA, Brooke and her team develop physical and digital materials as well as design solutions for fashion brands and manufacturers. These directly combine her knowledge of the latest developments in the ‘fashion-tech’ sector with her pioneering cross-discipline approach to developing new materials.
Brooke will talk about her passion for combining science, technology and fashion in her work as well as her development of innovative sustainable materials. She will also touch on her background and her path to being a renowned ‘fashion tech’ writer.
Sascha Camilli, PETA: Writer, Speaker, Activist

Vegan Activist and Author, Sascha Camilli from PETA, will talk about animal use in fashion and the ethical and environmental impact of animal skins. Her talk will provide attendees with an insider’s perspective of some of the exciting trends in vegan fashion and the rise in innovative natural, sustainable vegan materials.
