Robert teaches on the generic social work programme and is the module co-ordinator for the last practice placement for BSc (Hons) Social Work. He is a personal tutor for students on the BSc and the PG Dip Approved Mental Health Practitioner/ MSc Mental Health programmes; this includes support and monitoring of practice placements.
Robert is also the Subject Quality Co-ordinator for PG Dip Approved Mental Health Practitioner/ MSc Mental Health and the module coordinator for The Legal and Policy framework AMHP and Best Interest Assessor. He is also the moderator for Role of the Approved Mental Health Professional and Evidence Based Mental Health Practice. Students on this programme include Social Workers, Nurses, Psychologists and Occupational Therapists training to become Approved Mental Health Professionals under the Mental Health Act as well as best interest assessors under the Mental Capacity Act.
Robert supervises Masters and undergraduate research students and has represented the University on the Skills for Care Higher Education Institute/ Employer Forum West Midlands, which helps to inform and implement national policies to do with Social Work.
He has facilitated workshops at a national conference organised by the Social Care Institute for Excellence on the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
Robert has also been involved in the Student Academic Partners Scheme which received a Times Higher Education award. He is interested in the use of non-traditional and innovative assessments for which he has used the Student Academic Partners Scheme. Future research interest include whether Social Workers in multidisciplinary teams affect the medical model approach of these teams. Another area of interest is whether using the Best Interest/ Less restrictive option has resulted in less Black and Minority Ethnic people being sectioned under the Mental Health Act.
Robert is an External Examiner for the University of Lincoln and University of Portsmouth Department of Social Work’s Post Graduate courses. He has been on the Approval Panel for Bradford College and New Durham College Social Work degrees validated by Teeside University.
Robert is currently undertaking a PhD through the Faculty of Health, Education and Life Sciences at Birmingham City University.
