Katy is a Reader in Education in the Centre for the Study of Practice and Culture in Education (CSPACE). She has published on a wide range of educational and methodological issues and has undertaken research across a number of education sectors, including primary and secondary education, community and adult education, and further and higher education. She is a sociologist of education and has a particular interest in researching policy and practice relating to inequalities in higher education, including the related area of student finance reform and its impact on the stratification of higher education. She sits on the editorial board of two international journals and is a peer reviewer for numerous other education and methodological journals. She was previously Associate Professor of Higher Education at the University of Derby and Associate Professor of Higher and Professional Education at Staffordshire University.
Most recently she has worked on a number of externally funded educational research projects. These include: an Office for Students project to develop understanding on how universities evaluate their pre-16 widening participation outreach activities; a four year project funded by the Gatsby Foundation on good quality careers education in schools and colleges; a Department for Education project on the role of work placements in technical education; an Office for Students funded project evaluating student attainment interventions across three HEIs; a National Collaborative Outreach Programme funded project across two counties; and a Careers and Enterprise Company project on careers work in primary schools.
Katy is interested in supervising doctoral research projects that investigate educational inequalities, particularly in the field of higher education.
Over the last three years she has hosted the following international academics on study visits: Dr Rachel Buchanan, Newcastle University, Australia; Dr Narelle Lemon, Swinburne University of Technology, Australia; Dr Gulnaz Zahid, National University of Science and Technology, Pakistan; Dr Lars Wallner, Linkoping University, Sweden; Leena Penttinen, University of Jyvaskyla, Finland; Ingrid Bardsdatter, INN University, Norway.
She recently co-edited two journal special issues:
- Policy Futures in Education, ‘Mobilising Socially Critical Education Research’ (2018).
- Management in Education (BELMAS) on issues of leadership in professional doctorate programmes (2017).
She also offers consultancy in relation to:
- Creative pathways to research engagement and impact,
- Developing theories of change and evaluation strategies for educational projects and interventions,
- The use of social media for researchers and academics,
The theory and practice of collaborative working.
