Here are the key areas you’ll need to address:
Studying a postgraduate course usually means you want to specialise in something. So what’s driving you?
Show that you’ve researched the course offering. What is it about this particular course that appeals to you? Is it the lecturers? The modules? Etc.
Tutors want to know that you can handle postgraduate study, so show them how your undergraduate experiences or work life has equipped you for a more advanced level of study. Key areas to address are research and group work but this can vary depending on your chosen course.
Add anything relevant that relates back to your chosen course and shows how your skills will contribute towards your learning. What extra-curricular activities have you taken part in? What awards have you won? What employment or voluntary experience do you have that has helped you develop transferable skills? How do these specifically relate to the course you are applying for?
You should also mention your future plans and how a postgraduate qualification fits in. Try to look beyond your postgraduate study – do you plan to jump straight into a specific career or follow your studies with a research degree? Lastly, use plain, professional English and, where possible, utilise the language of your chosen industry.

There are no compulsory additional costs or charges associated with studying on this course. While you may choose to purchase personal copies of text books, all our key text books are available from our library or online (subject to normal library loan and online access arrangements). If your course includes a residential study session, the accommodation costs for this are already included in your course fee.
Based on the past experience of our students, you might find it helpful to set aside about £50 for each year of your studies for stationery and study materials. All our students are provided with 100 free pages of printing each year to a maximum total value of £15.

The module aims to provide you with a foundation for academic research skills employed in all modules, but particularly the Master’s dissertation. This will enhance your learning experience, so your research is both industry-relevant and academically valuable. You will learn to evaluate the conceptual nature of research philosophies and methods, appraise existing literature to develop a literature review using appropriate research methods and techniques, design a poster presentation which outlines integrated and analysed data using appropriate research methods and techniques, and make critical judgements on the applicability of appropriate professional skills and research ethics within a given research context.
This module focuses on resource management and its effective deployment and allocation to achieve sustainable competitive advantage for organisations. Two main resources will be considered – human and financial. You will be introduced to theoretical concepts underpinning resource development and deployment such as human capital development, change management, motivational theories, learning organisations, financial methods, investment appraisal and budgeting, as well as financial and management accounting. You will also identify the theories and techniques relating to human capital development, in particular those around motivation, as well as examining the role of financial management techniques for the monitoring and control of financial resources.
Procurement and Contract Law
All organisations need input of goods and services from external suppliers or providers. This module examines the developing role of purchasing and procurement within the supply function. Using contract law and its relevant legal duties, rights and processes, you will gain an understanding of the underpinning contractual obligations for individuals and organisations. You will evaluate common challenges faced by procurement and supply chain managers and how to overcome them. You will also appraise the main contracting issues for major programmes and projects, the main legal issues that relate to the formation of relationships in supply chains, and the legal implications of contractual non-performance in procurement and supply.
International Operations and Logistics Systems
This module will provide you with the opportunity to undertake a critical evaluation of supply chain management and its links to the marketplace, distribution networks, the manufacturing process and the procurement activity required, ensuring that customers are served by lower operational costs through effective logistics and supply chain operations. You will learn to critically appraise current practices in operations management, evaluating a variety of delivery modes and sales order planning. You will also evaluate and interpret the nature, scope and purpose of strategies for efficient logistics and supply chain management as well as best practice in procurement cycle concepts.
This module equips you to develop core skills and knowledge to support organisations in the management of Enterprise Systems and business process change, integrating different processes, people and technology to help streamline operations. You will be given a case study of an industrial challenge which you will then apply theories to as you create an Enterprise System – a set of interconnected activities and processes working in cohesion to achieve a particular goal. You will gain practical, hands-on experience to provide an in-depth understanding of Enterprise System functionality that complements and enhances the theoretical perspectives.
Strategic Planning for the Supply Chain
The module will consider in depth the effect of increasing competitive demand on all parts of the supply chain. You will also consider how companies can gain competitive advantage by aligning both their internal and external supply chains to enhance customer satisfaction, product profitability, customer-supplier partnerships, and manufacturing and distribution efficiencies. You will evaluate the impact Information Systems have on business performance and the strategic development of organisations, as well as appraising the creation of future resilient supply chains including business continuity, knowledge and innovation, waste minimisation in the supply chain and supply chain visibility.
Individual Master’s Project
You will undertake a sustained, in-depth and research-informed project, exploring an area of personal interest to you. In agreement with your supervisor, you will decide on your topic which will take the form of a practical outcome (artefact) with accompanying contextual material. Your topic must be aligned to the programme you are studying and informed by the research strategy of your school. You should also consider the relevance of this topic to your future academic or professional development. You are expected to work independently but will receive additional one-to-one support from your supervisor, who will be familiar with your chosen topic area.
You will acquire knowledge and understanding through formal lectures, tutor-led seminars and practical activities, as well as a range of independent learning activities.
There is an emphasis on guided, self-directed and student-centred learning with a progressively increasing independence of approach, thought and process. This independent learning includes an element of peer review in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the learning.
Lectures introduce themes, theories and concepts, which are further explored in seminars. You will benefit from technology-enhanced learning, where appropriate, through online resources, discussion forums and other activities.
Transferable/key skills, such as team-working, are pervasive and incorporated into modules and assessments as appropriate. You are encouraged to plan your own work schedules and required to meet deadlines. The course will foster your skills in reflection and self-awareness.

Jahangir Akhtar is an associate professor in the School of Engineering and the Built Environment.
Jahangir worked in the electronics industry and manufacturing systems, prior to moving into the public sector to work on accessing European funds for the City Council and provide training support local businesses. He worked with Rover Group and their supplier development programs and later joined Birmingham City University formally University of Central England (UCE), initially as consultant to external bodies and then moved in teaching in 2004 on postgraduate programs.
