October 2018

The Diamond Diploma follows the syllabus of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A) and is suitable for those who need to study diamonds in-depth, either to further their career or to fuel their passion. The course includes diamond identification and grading, which are studied in the laboratory, together with a series of lectures. This leads to the formal Gemmological Association of Great Britain examination.

What's covered in the course?

The Diamond Diploma is one of the world’s most respected diamond awards. Through theory and practice, you explore all the factors affecting a diamond’s appearance and properties. You investigate diamond grading, the 4Cs (carat weight, colour, clarity and cut), and how to identify imitations and treatments. You learn about the accurate recording and presentation of data, and employ creative problem-solving skills. Successful completion allows you to apply for election to Diamond Membership of the Gemmological Association, and to use the letters DGA after your name.

The Diamond Practical Grading Certificate and the Diamond Diploma Theory are individual elements of the Gemmology Diamond Diploma and can be taken separately. Contact the School of Jewellery for more information.

“The facilities are superb, and the delivery of the course is really engaging and interactive. The course content is challenging but really enjoyable, and the knowledge I have gained has proved to be invaluable in my work within the jewellery trade.”
Michael Barrows

Assay Office

Our gemmology students are based in new, state-of-the-art premises at 1 Moreton Street in the Jewellery Quarter with access to the highest specification of equipment available for gemmological education within the UK. You'll use diamond-testing equipment at Assay Office Birmingham's AnchorCert Gem Laboratory.

You will also have access to the School of Jewellery's inspirational and functional Vittoria Street building. A blend of traditional historic and cutting-edge contemporary, it is light, spacious and extremely well-resourced.

An extensive refurbishment programme integrated the Victorian Gothic building of 1863 with the adjacent 1912 extension and the Assay Office, a site further down the road. The architects’ success in doing so resulted in awards from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Civic Trust.
