Digital Media development requires a comprehensive understanding of image, video and mixed reality processing. BSc (Hons) Digital Media Technology, aims to develop you with the versatile and rich combination of skills that will enable you to design and develop tomorrow’s digital media products.

You’ll have the opportunity to practice professional skills by delivering the course content in a project-driven and practice-like way, in specialist labs containing the latest hardware and software. Your skills will be further developed through the group project based module which take place in year two of the programme.

We also have well-established links with companies such as BBC, Microsoft and Cisco, ensuring that the programmes remain current and relevant to industry. The course also enables you to interact with potential employers by collaborating with industrial partners and participating in various events throughout the academic year.

Graduates will be equipped for careers related to media and computing. You could explore careers in multimedia development, web and interactive application development and multimedia content development. 

You’ll also have the opportunity to take a sandwich placement year between your second and third year. This is highly recommend as it will give you an invaluable opportunity to hone your expertise, try out a potential career path and get relevant workplace experience that is valued by so many employers. The course is also part of the Erasmus scheme, which allows you to study abroad within the EU for a semester, normally during the second year of your course.

Our Digital Media Technology degree is part of the School of Computing and Digital Technology, located at the Millennium Point Building as part of the City Centre Campus, in the heart of Birmingham. Millennium Point was built as a focus for science, technology and education within Birmingham and the wider region, providing an excellent environment for exploring advanced technology.

Additional costs

There are no compulsory additional costs or charges associated with studying on this course. While you may choose to purchase personal copies of text books, all our key text books are available from our library or online (subject to normal library loan and online access arrangements). If your course includes a residential study session, the accommodation costs for this are already included in your course fee.

Based on the past experience of our students, you might find it helpful to set aside about £50 for each year of your studies for stationery and study materials. All our students are provided with 100 free pages of printing each year to a maximum total value of £15.

Year One

Computer Programming
20 credits

This introductory computer programming module provides the underpinning knowledge and practice for computing students to design, build and test software components. The module will make use of practical sessions primarily to allow you to apply programming principles and constructs in order to creatively solve problems by means of developing small programs.

Computer Systems
20 credits

This module presents a holistic view of how computer systems work and it also provides the underpinning knowledge required. This fundamental computer systems module puts into practice the learning done through reading, video lecturers, skills building labs and problem based learning for the acquisition of new knowledge and core practical competencies.

Innovation Project
20 credits

This first-year project allows you to develop and cultivate a creative mind-set through collaborative innovative practice, allowing you to bring together knowledge and imagination to construct a viable product. It is an opportunity to express your ideas, skills and talent to the wider community of innovative practice.

The project provides you with an opportunity to be part of a thriving community of innovators that practices connected learning. This is facilitated by putting you into inter-disciplinary project teams supported by innovation mentors, advisors and academics; culminating in you exhibiting your work to an international panel of experts.

Website Design and Development
20 credits

This module provides the underpinning skills necessary to develop an effective web based information system based around a clear understanding of the visual requirements of an interface, a structured design approach and the technical skills necessary to implement a solution.

Media Technology
20 credits

This module will develop your key understanding of media technologies in production. The aim of this module is to provide you with the knowledge and appreciation of the fundamental principles and practice of audio visual technology. You will explore and gain a deeper understanding of the science of image and audio capture.

Multimedia Design and Graphics
20 credits

This module aims to develop visual communication skills, introducing the student to core concepts and skills such as design conceptualisation, development and documentation, photography, image manipulation, visual promotion, and 2D animation.

Year Two

In order to complete this course a student must successfully complete all the following CORE modules (totalling 120 credits):

Sound for Visual Effects
20 credits

Sound is an important element in the viewer’s experience of a visual effects sequence. This module provides you with the technical skills and experience to record, edit and process sound to accompany visual effects.

Narrative Design
20 credits

This module investigates the process of screenwriting and provides opportunity for you to explore this process in preparation for your final year production. Furthermore, it contributes to development of the wider key skills required for employment, through in-class activities, assessments and background research.

Video Production Technology
20 credits

This module forms a core part of the production element of the course, providing the knowledge related to the production of video artefacts, focusing on planning, video production, post production, and video compression.

3D Modelling and Animation
20 credits

This module provides knowledge of and develops skills in the production of 3D models, rendering and animation for use in a variety of different media and platforms.

Multimedia Group Project
40 credits

You will participate in a small structured team to design, produce and test a multimedia product. The module allows you to build upon the experiences gained during the innovation project undertaken in your first year and to consolidate the additional knowledge you have gained in Semester 1 Year 2.

Year Three

In order to complete this course a student must successfully complete all the following CORE modules (totalling 120 credits):

Individual Honours Project
40 credits

The purpose of the module is to enable you to undertake a sustained, in-depth and research informed project exploring an area that is of personal interest to you. In agreement with your supervisor, you will decide upon your topic which will take the form of a practical outcome (artefact) with accompanying contextual material. The main consideration when choosing your topic is that it must be aligned to the programme you are studying, and you should consider the relevance of this topic to your future academic or professional development.

At this level, you will be expected to work independently but you will receive additional one-to-one support from your supervisor, who will be familiar with your chosen topic area. As you progress on the module, extra support will be available and this may take the form of group seminars, workshops and online materials that will help to develop your project. 

Creative Visualisation
20 credits

This module provides you with the technical comprehension necessary to organise, manipulate, and enhance video data at both the point of capture and in post-production ready for delivery. You should be able to precisely specify settings and develop workflows based off knowledge in video compression and software requirements, as well as enhance the visual image through grading and compositing.

Professional Practice
20 credits

This module gives you the opportunity to explore different approaches and theories as you develop a professional understanding of the industries in which you want to work, with the focus on finding viable routes into employment that use the skill set you have developed while at University. The module will also look at the development and management of the production processes, (commissioning, project development, and revenue generation) contextualising these concepts with real world scenarios.

Cross Platform Media
20 credits

Within this module you will develop productions that span a number of platforms such as film, games, social media, web and VR. It provides you with an opportunity to work with students from a number of disciplines and develop an understanding of how your knowledge and skills can fit into the production workflow of different media industries.

Consultancy and IT Management
20 credits

This module enables you to gain an understanding of the processes, scope and role when providing guidance or advice in a professional consulting capacity. It will also assist you if you join a larger organisation with the aspiration to become a leader and manager. The module provides awareness on the wider consulting profession and practice, the consulting role in computing and the management of client relationships. The focus will be to analyse and evaluate the frameworks, processes and techniques applied by computing consultants, managers and leaders.

Course Structure

Lectures are used to introduce themes, theories and concepts, which are further explored in tutorials. Technology-enhanced learning is used, where appropriate, through the provision of online resources, discussion forums and other activities. Textbooks are used, together with professional material and journal articles, in order to ensure that students develop a critical understanding of work in their discipline. The module guides direct students to a full range of resources, including books and journals, as well as specialised course-based material.

Analytical and problem solving skills are further developed using a range of appropriate 'real' and 'theoretical' case studies, plus a range of problem-based learning scenarios. Practical, including lab-based, sessions are used throughout the programme to develop practical skills and to place theory in a work-related context. Where appropriate, you will also use commercial development environments.

You will develop the key skills of research, academic writing and time management required for study at degree level throughout your first two years of study, which will enable you develop them further on the final-year individual project.

Transferable/key skills are pervasive and incorporated into modules and assessments as appropriate. For example, team-working skills are fostered via group activities. You are encouraged to plan your own work schedules and are required to meet deadlines. Reflection and self-awareness are fostered throughout.

A range of assessment methods are employed; assessment criteria being published in each assignment brief. Knowledge and skills are assessed, formatively and summatively using a number of methods, including coursework, examinations (seen and unseen, open and closed-book), presentations, practical assignments, vivas, online forums and project work.

Attendance requirements

There are 30 attendance weeks in each academic year.

A typical week on this course will include 12 hours of contact time over three or four days, plus self study time.

Mike Gilbert’s final year project was inspired. It combined his hobby - working with the Students’ Union - with his studies to produce a fantastic, interactive CD-ROM freshers’ information guide.

Mike’s now a web designer/developer for an educational trust in Exeter, producing online resources for teachers and learners. It’s a varied and interesting role that involves full project lifecycles - from researching products to designing, developing and testing solutions.

Jessica has thrown herself into student life at Birmingham City University, taking advantage of the wide range of student societies, representing the University to prospective students and getting to know the exciting city of Birmingham. She has also enjoyed the supportive environment, the course’s focus on the latest technology and the many opportunities to work on group projects. “I chose to study at BCU for multiple reasons, mainly for the course as I felt it suited what I wanted to do best, but also because Birmingham is not too far away from my home town of Cardiff.

The course content includes a lot of technical stuff and I felt I wouldn’t get bored easily as technology is always updating and I’d like to keep up with that. The University has many facilities that can be loaned out of hours, which I have used to borrow a camera lens to try something new. “The thing I’ve enjoyed most about my course is the way it allows me to work with my friends – because it’s so practically-based, we can easily work together as a group or come together to work on our studies, whether that’s going to the library and having a study session or going to each other houses. “I have a part-time job as a student ambassador, which includes working open and visit days, talking to potential future students and their parents, helping them find their way round and just being a friendly face. My main job, however, is to work with schools and colleges when they visit our University, including doing Q&As with them, taking them on tours and joining in with the activities they’re set to do.

I really enjoy this job as it gets me talking and meeting new people, and I like helping people and talking about my University which I am very proud of, plus it works around my timetable. “The support from the staff is amazing; I know that if I’m in any sort of trouble or stuck with any coursework, there will always be someone to help. All of our lecturers are happy to help – they’ll meet up and do some one-to-ones or they’ll reply as fast as they can through email.

There’s also the Centre for Academic Success, plus there are plenty of other people such as the Student Success Advisors or people at the ASK desk, or anyone in the Students’ Union. “Student life in Birmingham is awesome; it’s such a big city so there are loads of clubs to go out to!

There’s also plenty of societies to join – I’ve been a part of quite a few, such as Rock Climbing which I still do every Wednesday, Doctor Who and Fandoms society, Gaming Society, Rock Society – not to be confused with rock climbing! – and lots more. What’s good about studying in Birmingham for me is that it’s a completely different city from Cardiff; I get to discover a whole new place while also learning on a course that I love.”

Here at Birmingham City University, the School of Computing and Digital Technology is equipped with a multitude of professional, dedicated equipment. With world-class facilities including: two film and television studios, four multi-track recording studios, post-production facilities, and several hundred multimedia stations.

We have cutting edge facilities available to support the course and research that goes on in the School, including the purpose-built Media Centre at The Parkside Building, DMT Lab and Cisco Academy at Millennium Point. We also have several PC and Apple Mac computing suites with the latest industry standard applications and tools for audio, video and multimedia application development and content creation.

Kira Summers

Programme Leader, Lecturer

Kira is the Programme Leader for BSc Digital Media Computing and BSc Digital Media Technology, and she is Module Coordinator for a variety of modules delivered across Digital Media courses in the School of Computing and Digital Technology.

Prior to working in higher education, Kira worked in various roles, designing, developing and integrating sound, still images and video into mixed media solutions. She has worked in fields such as gaming, web development and education, performed at several venues including the Royal Albert Hall, and hosted regular local radio broadcasts.

Jay Patel

Senior Lecturer

Jay is a Lecturer in the School of Digital Media Technology. Jay has been involved with the delivery of ERDF projects. Since the successful completion of these projects he has moved into teaching. He currently delivers a variety of modules such as Audio Visual Technology, Moving Image Technology and Mathematics for Media.

Robert Mclaughlin

Lecturer

Robert is a lecturer whose emphasis is on student engagement with industry and external partnership development. He is a Prince2 Practitioner whose area of teaching is industry contextualisation, business, marketing and the work environment. 

He writes for media focused, genre and technology websites and a semi-regular basis as a freelance copywriter specifically about new media and technology and has been used to providing commentary on media industry by journalists and local and national radio (Free Radio and Radio 1). 

His work has led to student opportunities for mentoring and industry guidance from external clients such as Sky Academy, Spotify, YouTube and ITV. 

He has worked on multiple industry focused projects which have included documentaries for Canadian Broadcasters, student competition judged by Hollywood directors and student driven multi-media projects curated from the creators of 2000AD. 

He is also the project coordinator for Creative Networks a monthly event that is designed to increase student engagement within their subject matter and to learn from external partners and practitioners. He also runs the BCU-Comic Lab and co-hosts the weekly DMT Podcast show.

Andy White

Andy White

Programme Leader

Andy joined Birmingham City University 2001 as a Senior Lecturer within the School of Computing and Digital Technology. Following a number of years in course management he has recently been appointed Programme Leader managing a group of courses in the multimedia and broadcast area.

Andy began his career as a postgraduate researcher in 1995 at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle. His research in collaboration with the University of Essex and Sony Ericsson led to publications and the development of novel tools which can automatically design and optimise electronic systems.

Moving to the West Midlands in 1999, Andy worked as a consultant developing and implementing technology strategies that were delivered across the region to businesses and organisations.

As a Senior lecturer at Birmingham City University he continues to remain active in research and knowledge exchange through projects funded by various sources, such as DTI, ERDF and EU R&D Frameworks.

Andy holds an BEng(Hons) in Electronic and Communications Engineering and an MSc in Computer Based System Design from the University of Huddersfield and is currently working toward registration of a PhD.
