Have you ever wondered how the clothes you are wearing ended up in store? Where did the idea come from and why? Buyers and Merchandisers are the key decision makers in a fashion retail business, managing the creative and business processes that result in a fashion range.

Course Description

During this course you will learn the theoretical aspects of the development and buying of a fashion range supported with practical workshops. You will explore various aspects of fashion buying and merchandising including sourcing, product development, range planning, supply chain management and retail merchandising equipping you with the understanding and background to help you produce a commercial yet trend driven fashion collection.

Times: 10.00am - 4.00pm daily

What will you study?

On the first day you will get introduced to the roles of the Buyer and Merchandiser as well as an overview of the fashion industry. You will gain an understanding the fashion buying cycle from product concept to consumer. On the second day you will learn-by-doing and go outside to carry out a competitive shop report. The next day you will explore fashion range planning in depth and learn how Buyers and Merchandisers build a range. On the forth day, you wil learn how garments are sourced globally as well as an introduction to the basic principles of fashion merchandising. On the last day, you will present your own range in a creative presentation supported by rationale of your product decisions using the principles learnt on the course.

Tutor description

Mike Hansell is an experienced Fashion Buyer with 16 years of experience. After studying Fashion Management and Product Development at the University of Westminster in London and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, he has worked for some of the biggest fashion retailers in Europe in the buying function, including The Arcadia Group, MatalanRiver Island and based in Germany. He now lectures in various aspect of Fashion Buying & Business at universities and institutions across the UK.
