London, Shepherd’s Bush, 1993. A gentle-spirited young man, Ray, is discharged from a mental home as part of the new Care in the Community policy enacted by the government. Trouble is, the only community he has is his brother, Pete, who can’t be there for him all of the time.
As Ray falls in love with Laura, his whole world starts to change, but when her abusive boyfriend muscles in and a disturbed fellow inmate catches up with him, the dream of a better life begins to explode…
Joe Penhall (Mindhunter, Blue/Orange) won the John Whiting Award when Some Voices, his debut play, appeared at the Royal Court in 1994. Nearly 30 years on it remains a powerful and moving drama about mental health, innocence, loyalty and love. It was made into a film with Daniel Craig and David Morrisey.
