Errollyn Wallen

Conductors Michael Seal and Yannick Mayaud*

Angela Elizabeth Slater The Louder the Birds Sing (world première)*
Angela Elizabeth Slater Tautening skies (world première), soloist Laura Farré Rozada*
Errollyn Wallen Piano Concerto (world première), soloist Rebecca Omordia
Doreen Carwithen ODTAA overture
Leonard Bernstein Symphonic Suite from On the Waterfront

An electrifying programme of world premières. The two piano concertos were delayed from their originally planned debuts in 2020. Angela Elizabeth Slater's originally scheduled to debut in December 2020 and Errollyn's Wallen's for summer 2020, when the world ended up being locked down.

Also, we have two rarely-performed tours de force. Carwithen, a noted composer for film, wrote her overture ODTAA ("One Damn Thing After Another") in 1945, inspired by the eponymous John Masefield novel. Bernstein's Symphonic Suite from "On the Waterfront", originally the soundtrack from the multiple Oscar-winning film of 1954, is actually a single movement work, more like a tone poem in scope, and simmers with dramatic tension.
