Natural horn player Isaac Shieh, hiding behind his horn

Public Research Seminar: Isaac Shieh
Caprice Reimagined: New Voices for the Natural Horn

Caprice Reimagined is a collaborative project in which 12 new works for solo hand horn are being commissioned from 12 living composers. It aims to create an extension of the hand horn playing tradition, reflecting a desire to push beyond the boundaries and perceived capabilities encapsulated by Gallay in his Douze Grands Caprices written in 1835. This presentation draws from the various commissions and how their respective composers responded to writing for an unfamiliar and uncompromising instrument.

Described as a ‘natural horn virtuoso’ (The Horn Player) and an ‘era-defining’ (Il Graffio) musician, Isaac Shieh is a New Zealand musician and researcher of Chinese minority ethnic background. Isaac appears regularly with Britten Sinfonia, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Chineke! Orchestra, has performed as a soloist at the Edinburgh International Festival and Spoleto Festival dei Due Mondi, and is a Musician in Residence with Paraorchestra and New Wave Emerging Artist at Bloomsbury Festival.

Seminars are in RBC Workshop 2 and can also be accessed online via Zoom. A link to view the seminar via Zoom will be emailed ahead of the session.
